Borg Warner 35 , won't change into top gear? Fluid looks and smells good and is clean. level OK .. all other gears select normally.

Any ideas?

Whilst I'm at it ...is there a later 4 pseed box that'll replace it?

Are you checking the level as per instruction manual? ie with engine running etc?

only ask as my box is very sensitive to the fluid level being spot on, having a slight leak doesnt help but that will be sorted this winter.

I believe your gearbox has a vacuum modulator, if this fails it will not select top. If the vacuum pipe leaks it will also effect the change.

Never updated this ...turns out it was changing into top...it's just a good deal more low geared than I expected and it starts out in second unless it's on a hill! The way to prove it was to set off, get to ten miles an hour then knock it into 'L' and it changed DOWN! I enquired with some other Armstrong Siddeley bods and apparently this is normal behaviour!!!

HOWEVER, the Star is eqipped with a lever on the dash to vary the change up speed from 2nd the 3rd. Despite setting the lever on the box itself as per the manual it makes no damn difference at all...any BG35 experts out there?

You are not the only one! I had the same when I just got my Jaguar 420 ten years ago - thought I only had two gears. Then I discovered D1! This starts in and uses low gear. Before I always started in D2 which starts in second gear.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Borg-Warner_35_transmission
Quote:
Many people assume they have a two speed transmission because they expect the first Drive position (D2) to shift through all three gears as all automatic transmissions have done since 1968. Some vehicles had the same system without the D1 and D2, instead just having D, and only 5 stations on the quadrant.

Are you sure its a BW35 - it seems to me like the DG which was used till 1964 in most big auto saloons as the alternative to the GM Hydramatic. The BW35 was intended for more "lightweight" applications as well and replaced the DG
