And sadly it is not just our physical capabilities that decline with age. I nearly came to grief this year when working on my car. I simply "forgot" to place axle stands under the chassis when removing the rear springs. It wasn't until I had already started to remove the U bolts that it dawned on me that the whole flipping lot could land on me! |

Very true Ray, I find myself doing silly things nowadays and I suspect it will only get worse. I could never understand when father done something wrong and now I do it myself! I find it best to stand back and take a good look at what I am about to undertake, sometimes we get in a rush and there really is no need for it. |

Also with age, comes a more acute awareness, of what can go wrong?
I spend half a day, jacking, securing, cleaning up [so I don't stick my hand on swarf]....carefully handling & securing gas bottles [so they don't fall over, breaking yet another set of valves]...making sure all the needed tools are to hand [to save endless trudging back & forth]....only to answer the phone...and subsequently, totally forget what job I was going to do in the first place! |

I also get distracted quite easily these days. On one occasion my wife called me in for lunch and I was in the middle of a brake overhaul on the Austin Seven. When I returned to the garage I thought all I needed to do was adjust the brakes but while doing that I noticed that I had forgotten to fit the split pin to a cotter! The realisation that I could have missed something like that was so shocking I was taken ill.
I hate getting old but it's better than the alternative, I suppose! |

Just had 3 paramedics in 2 ambulances here trying to restore my breathing from a severe asthma attack. That sort of thing didn't happen in my youth! My main problem with cars nowadays is forgetting to replace the oil filler cap! Once even had car boil, looked and I had forgotten to replace the radiator cap Don't trust myself with anything else so have to take vehicles to local garage |

I carry a spare Jaguar oil filler cap in the car amongst the other spares. I've not needed one - yet - but I have saved others from disaster, and they weren't that old either! However, I did forget to re-attach a shock absorber once. |

I know someone who forgot to tighten the sump plug with disastrous results.
The car in question is a Rolls Royce Silver Ghost! |

Doesn't only happen to us "oldies" folks. When I was in my twenties, I refitted the huge propshaft to an AEC 22 ton lorry.
I was called away to a phone call, went back to the lorry and collected up all my tools.
Later that night the propshaft came of the back of the gearbox with disastrous results., as I had forgotten to tighten the bolts.
Ever after I would not and still will not leave any job half-done. |

Agreed, we all have senior moments at all ages! Lack of concentration or more likely distractions during jobs. _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |
