We have just been down the yard, the Commer just won't run right. We took all the HT leads off and traced them all back. We found that the firing order wasn't matched so swapped the leads back round.

She now fires up straight away and ticks over, there is however some slight missing that will be down to timing. It will be number one plug back out and check her on TDC and the timing dowel in the back of the fywheel lines up.

Can you not just 'swing' the distributor a bit, one way or the other, first?

Yes, we have tried that and it has got better but when you apply the throttle and take the revs up it pops/misfires a few times.

I am planning to take her to Gaydon on the 9th June. She will be trailered there so she doesnt have to run for a long period. I do though want to take her out on the road for some trial runs first.

That could be, incorrect advance curve? I take it the dizzy has mechanical advance? Does it have vacuum as well?

Other than that, then it could be a carb problem...blocked jet, for example?

Got the lorry engine running properly now, the new thermostat is working and we have flushed the system. We left her running for 30 minutes this morning, all pipes warmed up correctly and she didnt overflow. Very pleased, next step a short drive out on the road!

Been getting one of the Hillmans going today, have been having trouble opening the boot lid. Got it sorted by removing the rear seat back and taking out the ply panels, opeing it from the inside.

I have been stripping out the interior of the TC. Removed the floors; the prop shaft and the master cylinder. Made a start on removing bolts to free the toe board. (Apparently also known as a ramp plate).

The plan is to remove the old gearbox and fit a 5 speed conversion. The kit supplied by Hi-Gear engineering includes a new bell housing designed to match the XPAG engine. I would need to replace the old broken one anyway.

I shall have the engineers rebuild a Ford type 9 (Sierra) gearbox with a modified higher first gear.

Ray, I used to be a complete Luddite refusing all modern conveniences, but have a Jaguar synchro box now in one car and it is knife through butter. Similarly both cars have electronic ignition too. But last weekend I taught a youngster the art of double declutching with the Moss box and while it took him a while to get it I was left with a warm glow afterwards. But I find your conversion highly practicable although I swapped rear axle ratios which was good enough for me and far easier. I just wanted the E to keep as original as possible.

I have no qualms about modifying the MG. Firstly, the car is not an unspoilt time warp but a hastily assembled basket case...and secondly, when it comes to MG, all bets are off because competition was and still is central to the marque.

T series cars followed the pre war practice being equipped with a low first gear so that their owners could enter trials if they wished. The Type 9 (Sierra) first gear is even lower than the original MG so that is why I am opting for the higher option of 2.98/1. The fifth gear is effectively an overdrive.

I am also investigating the best diff. ratio. The TC has 5.125/1. There are a number of cheap options from the Morris minor/ spridget range but I will listen to advise from experienced MG guys.

Supercharging is another option that I am considering. Everyone who has fitted one has said they would never go back to the twin carb set up but importantly I am only making easily reversible changes.

I took the hatch out for a quick road test. I've had a problem with the exhaust banging against the rear valance at inconvenient times (at idle, and at around 30-35mph) because it was a bit too high. I've modified the centre mounting to drop it a little, and I wanted to check that it wouldn't foul on speed bumps. There's one on the farm drive where I keep it, and it was OK over that, so I took it around the nearby town where there are some more, and it was fine there too.

It's obviously moved a little, though, because I think it's now banging against a rear spring. I may find the time to try to address that next week, or may leave it for a proper trip and see how annoying it becomes.

Gave big Dodge a spring clean yesterday (somewhat belatedly), and warmed everything through, exercised the gears, brakes and so on.

After just over a month we've finally got the brakes sorted on the Princess. Full rebuild front calipers, brand new discs and pads, all bled through nicely. Flash rusting is just because it's been stood around waiting for parts for the caliper rebuild, it's been one of those jobs.

Also got the driver's door mirror stem repaired after someone snapped it off while the car was parked up waiting for parts. The to do list is quite short now, and mostly very expensive items like suspension re-gas (about £400) and a respray (several thousand, a big saving up job).

So that I can repair the rear door more easily, I've swapped it with my quite rotten spare. Normally doing the doors is a bit of a chore, this time it went surprisingly easy.

It will take me a few days to strip, repair, and repaint the door I took off, especially with the temperature being what it is. Once done, that will be the biggest chunk of bodywork completed and leave me with just a few edges to attend such as a couple of sections on the rear arches.

Took the Escort for an MOT, it passed with no advisories and a comment that the brakes are "Bloody sharp". Happy days!
