Looks like we're all busy - it must be that time of year.
Hi Folks, finally got started to try & cure the Zephyr's incontinence. Gearbox, overdrive & rear axle drained. Gearbox side plate removed & stripped,
new shaft lip seals & interlock spring fitted, refitted with new gasket. Overdrive selector shaft remove & new lip seal fitted. Rear axle appeared to have excess back lash so half shafts & diff carrier removed. Crownwheel & pinion backlash was spot on,with the problem being in the opposing gears of the diff. Made new copper thrusts & re-assembled to spec. New inboard lip seals fitted to rear axle to protect hubs/brakes(working through the diff carrier access - oh joy) New rear brake shoes fitted & half shafts refitted with new gaskets. Tested while jacked up to 50mph & all worked. No leaks but no oil filled yet so to be expected. Cheers,JD. _________________ 1958 Ford Zephyr Mk2 Convertible

Bought a 8mm alu plate, cut it to fit the horizontal space between radiator and front end on the Jensen. Painted it.
Retrieved the bonnet and placed it upside down on the car lift. The edges are quite rusty which is fairly strange as the car has not seen much rain. Maybe it stood in a damp garage for a few years. Luckily it has not spread to the top of the bonnet. Hope to clean the edges tomorrow and put some pain on it. In the mean time I cleaned the hinges and painted them. _________________ a car stops being fun when it becomes an investment |

Another couple hours work this morning, finishing off re-wiring the sidelights. Got the new wiring linking back into the old control panel and now the sidelights work off the switch. Not bad considering all the wiring is new, I still need to sheeth the wiring under the front valance but I have fitted bullet connectors at points underside that I can easily get to to taking marflex between them is straightforward. _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |

De-rusted and primed the bonnet edges. Made a battery holder and painted that. Repaired the accelerator pump which was a great relief, the car had trouble starting from cold. A little valve was stuck. Using Youtube to find the cause was very helpful! _________________ a car stops being fun when it becomes an investment |

We use marflex where I work so I can bring rolls of it home. Its a woven type material that comes with an internal diameter of about 10mm. The outside of it has a heat and water resistant coating. So its ideal to feed electrical wires through it, especially on the underside of a vehicle to give it some protection. _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |

Beware of these, I don't think the bearings are much good. I overhauled a dynamo using a kit off fleabay but it wasn't long before it was as noisy as the old one with an annoying "tick" from the front bearing. |

Had some matching paint made and painted the edges of the bonnet. Frame (inside of the bonnet) sprayed with heat resistant matt black paint.
Noticed the carburetor is leaking. Ah well... my todo list was getting too short so happy this came up _________________ a car stops being fun when it becomes an investment |
