FIRE UP THE GETAWAY CAR!

• Philip Glenister to curate the ultimate heist car showcase at London Classic Car Show
• DCI Gene Hunt swaps iconic quattro for famous police evaders
• Ultimate felonious cars from TV, film and reality to star at ExCeL
• Advance tickets now on sale offering significant discounts

Television star and confirmed petrol-head Philip Glenister is to curate the special ‘Getaway Cars’ display at the 2018 London Classic Car Show at ExCeL London (15-18 February).

Famous for ‘firing up’ his Audi quattro when acting as throwback DCI Gene Hunt in Ashes to Ashes – Glenister will be maximising his insider police knowledge to bring together this showcase of cars as chosen by notorious crooks to evade the law whether on celluloid or in real life.

Vehicles already on the shortlist include a number of criminal classics such as the MK1 Transit van, Jaguar Mark 2, Sierra Cosworth Sapphire and, perhaps, even a Mini Cooper S as famously employed by Charlie Croker (Michael Caine) and his gang to escape from the Carabinieri di Torino in the original Italian Job movie.

“We will take our inspiration from TV, films and real life,” said Glenister who also co-presents Channel 4’s motoring show For the Love of Cars programme. “these cars need to be quick, handle well and, of course, have lots of room in the back. I’m sure we’ll have an iconic red quattro exhibited somewhere at the show, but this display will be about cars from the other side of the law. It’s pleasure to curate at such a special car show and where better to celebrate getaway cars than in East London at ExCel. Fire up the London Classic Car Show!”

Adding to the sense of drama, Glenister’s final selection will be showcased on a specially designed and arresting exhibition stand that will further both its visual impact and the visitor experience.

All those wishing to see the Getaway Car display at the 2018 London Classic Car Show can take advantage of significant discounts on offer for those booking in advance. If purchased now, adult admission costs just £25 (£30 on the door) and a range of upgraded Premium and Family Tickets are also available online.

Moreover, all tickets also include entry to the London Classic Car Show’s sister show Historic Motorsport International, which celebrates the UK’s leading role in all areas of historic motor sport.

A JAGUAR FIT FOR A PRINCESS.

• XJ-S built specially for Diana, Princess of Wales at The London Classic Car Show
• One-off cabriolet with rear seats for young Princes William and Harry
• Automotive and historical icon displayed by XJS Club
• Tickets on sale with significant reductions for those buying in advance

A notable Jaguar XJ-S Cabriolet with royal connections will be one of a record number of stunning retro cars from the halcyon heydays of motoring appearing at next month’s London Classic Car Show at ExCeL London (15-18 February).

While many of the 700+ wonderful automotive icons on display will have their own incredible histories, few if any will have better stories to tell than this totally one-off 150mph Jaguar – a sportscar which was fashioned especially for Diana, Princess of Wales.

Dating back to 1983 this famous XJ-SC was not only one of the most photographed cars of its era but was also totally unique, built to the Princess’ own bespoke specification.

While the other 5,012 cabriolets created in Coventry between 1983 and 1988 were all hedonistic two-seater speedsters, this stately XJ-SC (reg E763KYX) was uniquely fitted with two small rear seats just so the young Princes William and Harry could ride along with their mother and her bodyguard. It is generally accepted that the Princess enjoyed driving her custom-made Jag so much that her protection officer was often relegated to the front passenger seat!

Additionally, the V12 powered regal cabriolet features an individually made, and permanently fixed, rear hard top to ensure that the two Princes could not strike their heads on the solid targa roof bar in the event of an accident.

Also, unlike any other XJS, the once royal roadster is fitted with personalised leather and Harris Tweed seat trims, chosen by Princess Diana. What’s more the exterior bodywork came with four round headlights similar to those seen on the US export and was finished in British Racing Green to match the Aston Martin that husband Prince Charles had acquired around the same time.

The Princess was regularly seen driving this majestic model from 1987 to 1991. Then, when the two Princes outgrew their small rear seats, she sold it to the Jaguar Heritage Trust, an educational charity established to preserve the legacy of Jaguar for the nation, in exchange for a contribution to one of her own charitable causes.

The following year, Diana replaced the British-made XJ-SC with a German-made Mercedes 500SL – a controversial decision which caused quite a commotion at the time as no member of the Royal Family had purchased a foreign car in memory.

“The London Classic Car Show is littered with cars boasting their own remarkable histories,” said Bas Bungish, Event Director. “There are F1 single-seaters raced in period by world champions such as Graham Hill and Michael Schumacher and getaway cars involved in staking out The Great Train Robbery. Princess Diana’s very own Jaguar is another of these evocative exhibits which will certainly conjure up many fond recollections among our visitors who really appreciate nostalgia.

“Seeing the two Princes today, it’s hard to remember that they were once a pair of little boys strapped into those special passenger seats behind their mother. How time flies!”

The tailor-made Jaguar is being exhibited at ExCeL by the XJS Club, one of an unprecedented number of enthusiastic car clubs putting together dedicated displays this year’s expanded London Classic Car Show.

Classic car owners, collectors, experts and enthusiasts wanting to attend the 2018 London Classic Car Show can take advantage of significant discounts on offer when booking in advance.

WINSTON CHURCHILL’S DAIMLER HEADS FOR GRAND AVENUE SHOW.

• Sole surviving Drophead dating back to Britain’s darkest hours
• Wartime leader’s chosen car for the electoral campaign trail
• One of more than 50 special parading at The London Classic Car Show
• Tickets on sale with significant reductions for those buying in advance

It is not often that a car can claim to have shaped history but the historical importance of a distinguished Daimler appearing on The Grand Avenue at next month’s London Classic Car Show (15-18 February) should not be underestimated. It is not only the sole surviving pre-war DB18 Drophead Coupe but, more significantly, also the very car used by Winston Churchill for his political campaigns between 1944 and 1949.

As he toured the country, Churchill would sit on the rear deck addressing packed crowds via a loud speaker system fitted on top of the car’s bonnet. The DB18 was deemed appropriate as its relatively compact size ensured the huge numbers packing the streets could have a good view of their national hero.

As currently depicted in the Oscar nominated Darkest Hour movie, Churchill was without doubt one of the most inspirational and charismatic leaders in British history, and during the Second World War the driving force against Nazi Germany. This extraordinary Daimler played its part, too.

Announced in 1939 just before the outbreak of hostilities, the DB18 was the ultimate version of Daimler’s famous Fifteen model. It was the first Daimler to boast independent suspension and was powered by an enlarged, 2,522cc version of the overhead-valve six first introduced in 1933.

An initial production run of 23 Drophead Coupés was planned for 1939, but production was soon halted when war broke out and didn’t resume until 1945. Adding to the disruption, only eight of the original cars had been built when Daimler’s factory was destroyed during the Blitz of 1940 and five of those were destroyed during the attack. Today only one of the surviving three DB18s exists: chassis number 49531 – Winston Churchill’s car with its unique Carlton Carriage Company designed drophead coupe body.

The remarkable machine has just been returned to its former splendor having undergone a major £120,000 restoration and now joins more than 50 of the world’s finest automotive creations parading up and down The Grand Avenue runway, the central feature running almost the entire length of ExCeL within the expanded The London Classic Car Show.

“This very special Daimler not only has enormous provenance in the classic car circles as the only surviving DB18 Drophead Coupe but is also a car which played a major role in shaping the the history of this county and, indeed, the world – it ticks all the boxes,” said Bas Bungish, Event Director.

“It’s presence at The London Classic Car Show is all the more pertinent, too, with the Darkest Hour putting the spotlight on Churchill’s incredible leadership at the box office and actor Gary Oldman tipped for an Oscar for his depiction of the the great man.”

LONDON’S THRIVING CLUB SCENE.

• Record numbers of car clubs to exhibit at London Classic Car Show
• Expanded Car Club Square packed with marque experts and enthusiasts
• Owners of Aston Martins, Ferraris, Jaguars, Lamborghini and MGs out in force
• Special exhibits include Princess Diana’s XJS and rare V8-engined Capri
• Tickets on sale with significant reductions for those buying in advance

Next week’s London Classic Car Show (15-18 February) will be the biggest and best yet. Highlighting the superb retro event’s spiralling growth, an unprecedented number of enthusiastic motoring clubs will all be exhibiting at ExCeL London.

Many of the top marques – including Audi, BMW, Corvette, Lamborghini, Mercedes, Porsche and Rover – will be well represented within an expanded Car Club Square with many showcasing standout models on their bespoke displays.

As previously announced, the Jaguar XJS Club will be presenting a unique XJ-S Cabriolet specially commissioned for Diana, Princess of Wales. Produced in 1983, this illustrious XJ-S comes with a pair of small rear seats for her two young Princes, William and Harry.

The TVR Club is also celebrating open top motoring, marking an important milestone in the Blackpool-based sportscar company’s history. It’s now 40 years since the launch of the company’s first convertible, the TVR 3000S, in 1978. Likewise, the theme of the Bristol Owners’ Club dazzling display will be ‘dropheads’ with a pair of rarely seen one-off models under the spotlight on its noteworthy stand.

The Kent branch of the Ferrari Owners’ Club has big plans, too. It will be flaunting a totally original 288GTO plus a mint Boxer BBi, one of only 42 right-hand-drive imported to the UK.

Another very special supercar – albeit a contemporary classic – will take pole position on the mouth-watering Aston Martin Owners Club display. It is one of a limited edition of just ten Vanquish S RAF Red Arrows models commissioned to raise awareness and donations for the RAF Benevolent Fund.

Those with a passion for all things Ford will also be out in force. The RS Owners Club is celebrating 50 years of the MK1 Escort Twin Cam while the Capri Mk1 Owners’ Club three very special models, topped by a very scarce South African produced Capri Perana powered by a 5.0-litre V8 engine sourced from the contemporary Ford Mustang.

With a reputed membership numbering more than any other single marque car club in the world, it is no surprise to see a sizable MG Owners’ Club presence in Car Club Square. Its display will include the famous ex-factory MGB that Paddy Hopkirk and Andrew Hedges raced at Le Mans in 1965. More recently the car (DRX 255C) was owned by renowned MG stalwart Barry Sidery-Smith who sadly passed away last summer. As a fitting tribute to him, the iconic MGB will be returning to Le Mans in June.

“Whether its displaying these truly special cars or just sharing their knowledge and enthusiasm with show goers, the presence of these passionate car clubs really adds yet another key dimension to the visitor experience,” enthused Bas Bungish, Event Director. “Since being introduced three years ago, Car Club Square has expanded enormously and it is now an integral part of what’s the greatest gathering of classic cars ever seen at ExCeL.”

Those wishing to share their fervour for retro motoring with like-minded individuals – and to savour more than 600 of the world’s finest automotive creations – can take advantage of significant discounts on offer when booking tickets for the 2018 London Classic Car Show in advance.
