I watched Salvage Hunters Classic Cars on Wednesday evening on Quest, that wasn't bad.

Agreed it was ok, needed a bit more "zip" if you see what I mean, but no false dramas iirc which was a bonus.

I did start watching a 'new' car SOS the other night, I turned over after about 10 minutes.

I don't mind SOS, I watched the Alpine one last night. The car was in scrap condition, so to bring that example back to life for its owner (who'd endured a real run of terrible luck) was worth the watch.

I turned on the other night and watched a couple of episodes of American Pickers, that my favourite now.

They were digging through this barn covered in chicken poo and rubbish when they uncovered a 1949 Mercury. Such lovely original condition. That's what I like, the discovering of classics rather than the over-restoring of them.

Just watching Salvage Hunters take a lovely Mini and completely strip it and send it off 'to someone they know' to do all the prep etc and full respray.

What I don't like is that in the real world restorers just don't do that. We are enthusiasts who work on budgets and in our own sheds. These programmes to me just make light of the hobby and just look at what profit can be made.

True, but then that's all that Salvage Hunters do when looking for antiques and other general stuff in the "normal" series. That particular programme is just about finding stuff that people don't want, getting it for as low a price as possible, and then giving it a quick buff up and selling on for profit. So it's not like the classic car version was going to be any different.

I'm surprised the Mini specialist was interested in the Min for big money, it was nice enough but quite a bitsa. The Porsche, I quite like 928s but that one didn't excite me much. The misery of those wiring woes put me off.

The Goblin programme is on tonight, re-working (ruining?) an old Landy.

I will give the Goblin works show another go, see how they mash up the next vehicle.

I was sat watching Goblin works butcher a perfectly good Land Rover when they went to a specialist to make some Ali aircraft style seats. The thing that got me was that the chap who made the seats had made me a fuel tank for my Commer lorry!!

He made it for me 7 or 8 years back, he had the old tank as a sample and completely fabricated a new Ali one to the exact original pattern, even including all the swages and indents. A very nice bloke and very very skilfull.

In 1997 (was that really 21 years ago?) I was asked to take part in the Beeb's "The Car's the Star" show. Arrived 13.30, got home 0630, all for about 3 minutes screen time!

Such a nice Landy that they ruined too. I'm not evangelical about Land Rovers in particular, but I don't much like seeing anything of a certain age, chopped up and wrecked in the name of dubious fashion or style. It looked like a clown car by the end, with front wings sagging down at the outer edges - I know how the poor old girl felt. All a bit graffiti and tattoo parlour for me. And if I hear the word "artisan" one more time ...

The MGB the previous week was a mess also.

There seems to be a trend - maybe it's just the slant that TV programmes give things - for people buying an old car because they look different, or "cool", but with no interest in preservation or the history for a given vehicle, more like to impress your mates. Cars being painted in the wrong colour because "it looks cool", or "it'll be worth more". Modern gadgets fitted because people only want the look, without having to learn about how the old running gear works and needs to be operated.

At least on SOS they do save some pretty ropey cars, and keep the mods to a minimum. For that reason, I can live with a bit of fake drama.

Agreed Rick, such a shame to butcher these cars about just so they look cool. I would rather watch anything that saves a vehicle.

Is Goblin trying to be a UK version of something like Sin City Motors?

At the risk of sounding miserable...
Anything with "American" in it, won't watch, over-acted, over-dramatised, they make words up and show you the same scene clip repeated about 57 times during the same programme... NO
Fantomworks - can't spell, obviously off to a bad start...
Someone actually let the oil out of a perfectly good engine and ran it to destruction !! That should carry a prison sentence...
Sorry, not found anything I'd avidly watch as yet, open to suggestions but for the time being think I'll stick to magazines.

I agree with most of the opinions about classic cars on Tv - BUT the one I HATE is the one hosted by Quentin Wilson and Jody Kidd. I can't stand them squirming tightly cross legged on sofas trying to outdo each other with verbose descriptions of their favourite cars.
And another thing, how come it takes me 2 or 3 years to to a re-build???
My latest find on Freeview is Channel 81 Talking Pictures. This features old B movies, mainly British, from the 1930s - 80s and some of the street scenes are priceless. One or two of the British film companies were obviously sponsered by The Rootes Group with Humbers, Singers and Sunbeams featuring heavily.
Bye, Franklin.

You might be thinking of a different one, but that was done in American Hotrod. They'd persuaded someone to part with a car they'd had in the family for years and years, then because it was going to have a new engine, they drained the oil and revved the original one until it failed. Instead of offering it to someone who could have used it. Maybe US engines and spares are so easy to get it wasn't worth it. Annoyed me too.

Still, as I read it, the chaps at that garage got their comeuppance. The programme showed them getting old cars and sticking new chassis, engine, gearbox, interior and stuff into them, but then returning them as old cars. The DMV (US version of the DVLA) obviously saw the show and decided the hotrods should get tested in what I think was their version of SVA testing, and registered and run as new cars.
