On the road to Brighton.

Entries open for the 122nd staging of the world’s longest running and most charismatic motoring event.

Entries for this year’s legendary Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, supported by Hiscox open this week. The Royal Automobile Club will be staging the 122nd Run this year on Sunday 4 November.

The world’s longest running motoring event commemorates the Emancipation Run of November 1896 which celebrated the passing into law of the Locomotive on the Highway Act. It was this milestone legislation that raised the speed limit for ‘light locomotives’ from 4mph to 14mph and came after the equally antiquated requirement for a man to walk in front of all moving vehicles waving a red flag had also been abolished.

Now, more than 120 years after that very first Run, hundreds of extraordinary pre-1905 vehicles honour the pioneering spirit and engineering dexterities of those intrepid early motorists on a similar historic 60-mile journey from Hyde Park in Central London to the seafront in the Sussex coastal resort of Brighton.

Such is the unique character and allure of the annual automotive pilgrimage that it attracts entries from all over the globe and draws vast crowds along the route.

Many famous personalities take part each year. In recent running these have included knighted Olympians Sir Steve Redgrave CBE and Sir Ben Ainslie CBE, Le Mans winner Jochen Mass, rock musician Nick Mason, BBC radio presenters Chris Evans and Ken Bruce as well as master baker and television presenter Paul Hollywood. Last year Movember Foundation ambassadors 1996 F1 World Champion Damon Hill OBE and adventurer Charley Boorman jumped aboard one of the very first Rover-badged cars.

“It was an utterly amazing experience,” reported Hill. “We expected lots of people to be lining the road when we left Hyde Park but they were all the way along the route cheering, hooting and waving. We gave the trumpet on the side of our car a good work out and my arm is a bit tired from all the waving!”

“It was an incredible adventure – bizarre but absolutely wonderful,” added Boorman. “The roads to Brighton were just full of people. It’s one of those marvellous events you just have to do if the opportunity presents itself.”

This year’s Run again will include a well-earned mid-way halt at the ever-enthusiastic and helpful Honda Gatwick dealership where cars can be fettled and motorists refreshed plus a time-honoured checkpoint in Crawley High Street where travellers and spectators all will be well looked after with provisions and entertainment provided by Gatwick Airport.

Though not itself a competitive event, the Run will also include a Regularity Time Trial thus providing plucky entrants with an additional challenge. Participants have to pre-nominate a target average speed for an allocated 13-mile section in the Sussex Downs with the driver who gets closest to their selected speed being declared the winner.

As in recent years, the Veteran Car Run provides a fitting grand finale to the Royal Automobile Club’s busy London Motor Week – a week in which the celebrated Club presents an array of functions and events to suit all motoring tastes. Of late these have included forums, dinners, trophy presentations, lectures and exhibitions as well as the free-to-view Regent Street Motor Show now held annually on the Saturday immediately before the Run.

Adding to the build-up, renowned auctioneer Bonhams hosts a special London to Brighton Run sale on the preceding Friday afternoon with an eye-catching selection of veteran cars and related automobilia coming under the hammer.

More information on the Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run supported by Hiscox – including full details of how to enter or spectate – can be found on the official website: www.veterancarrun.com.

London to Brighton veterans on the road for men's health.

Movember Foundation appointed as Official Charity Partner for annual Veteran Car Run.

The Royal Automobile Club, organiser of the iconic Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, supported by Hiscox, is delighted to announce an exciting new partnership with the Movember Foundation.

The only global men’s health charity, the Movember Foundation works year-round to help men live happier, healthier, longer lives. Known best by their annual Movember campaign in November, they are focused on raising funds and awareness around the causes of prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and men’s mental health and suicide prevention. To date, the Foundation has funded over 1,200 innovative projects in the cause areas, across 21 countries.

As tradition dictates, the hugely evocative Veteran Car Run also takes place in November with large numbers of the plucky participants – many of whom travel from overseas to be part of the world’s oldest and most charismatic motoring event – dressing up in period clothing as they board their venerable pre-1905 cars for the annual pilgrimage from Hyde Park to the Sussex coast.

With its timely November date and alluring appeal that always attracts thousands of roadside spectators, the magical showcase proffers the perfect plinth for the Movember Foundation to raise both awareness and funds.

As a curtain-raiser to its new Official Charity Partner role, the Movember Foundation was represented on last year’s Run by 1996 F1 World Champion Damon Hill OBE and renowned adventurer Charley Boorman (photo above). The pair teamed up to pilot a 1904 Rover 8HP to Brighton.

Now all those involved in this autumn’s event, whether they be entrants, passengers, marshals, support crews, followers, visitors, friends or family members are being encouraged to grow moustaches and join the movement. The Movember Foundation will be encouraging all pubs and villages along the route to show their support in the lead up and on the day and join the Veteran Car Community of fundraisers.

To help all-comers get involved, an online community of fundraisers has been created where members can post photos and share ideas. All those joining the community will also be eligible for prizes and incentives including the once-in-a-lifetime chance to partake in the coveted ‘tearing the flag’ ceremony as performed by Hill and Boorman last November.

Furthermore, entrants will be able to show their support and simultaneously generate yet more recognition for the Movember Foundation via the purchase of an exclusive ‘carstache’ which can be displayed proudly on all participating veteran cars (photo bottom below) with all funds raised going directly to the charity.

“This is an exciting opportunity to support one of the most celebrated and historic motor events in the world,” said Anne-Cecile Berthier, Movember Foundation County Director UK & Europe. “Working together in partnership with the Veteran Car Run team will allow us to meet and engage with the local and international motoring community. It will also provide an exceptional platform for the Movember Foundation to raise funds to continue the incredible work we are doing to improve the health, and quality of life, of men around the world.”

The Movember Foundation’s commitment to changing the face of men’s health is one that is fully supported and endorsed by all those organising the ever-popular Veteran Car Run.

“It’s a charity that is close to all of our hearts and we are proud to be spreading the Movember message and making a difference,” acknowledged Ben Cussons, Chairman of The Royal Automobile Club’s Veteran Car Run Steering Group. “By its very nature, the Veteran Car Run appeals to males of all ages and its time-honoured date in early November presents the ideal opportunity to unite with the Movember Foundation to raise awareness and vital funds. This is a terrific partnership to inspire donations, conversations and real change.”

Celebrating a very special Shuttleworth anniversary.

It is 90 years since one of Britain’s most passionate early motorists first joined the London to Brighton bandwagon

As the world’s longest running motoring event, the annual Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run supported by Hiscox is no stranger to celebrating milestones. In November participants aboard their pioneering pre-1905 vehicles will be honouring the 122 years since the original Emancipation Run of 1896 which welcomed the speed limit for ‘light automobiles’ being raised for 4mph to 14mph and abolished the need for a man to walk in front of all vehicles waving a red flag.

A number of other notable landmarks will be acclaimed on Sunday 4 November, too – few more distinguished, perhaps, than the 90th anniversary of Richard Shuttleworth’s debut on the timeless event back in 1928 driving what is considered to be the first 12bhp, four cylinder Panhard-Levassor ever built.

Over the following decade, the renowned aviation and motoring enthusiast became a regular on the road to Brighton (photos below) only failing to make the start in 1935 after missing the deadline to file his entry – and, even then, he cheekily joined in at Westminster Bridge.

Shuttleworth sadly lost his life on an RAF training exercise in 1940 aged just 31, however his 1898 Panhard (registration: TM 19) has remained in the family ever since and today resides in the world famous Shuttleworth Collection of vintage planes and cars that Richard founded before his untimely death. Indeed, the Panhard was the car that started The Collection, today regarded as one of the finest living museums of its genre to be found anywhere on the globe.

As with so many participants on The Veteran Car Run, Shuttleworth’s debut back in 1928 was something of a fraught affair. The enthusiastic young man purchased the car specifically to join the Run but, just the day before the start, Panhard’s UK agents said they were unable to make the necessary preparations.

Undaunted by this last-minute setback, he and a friend worked through the night to get the mechanicals working and they proceeded to complete the distance with four passengers aboard.

Since then the Panhard has completed the hallowed journey on numerous further occasions and will be aiming to honour its 90th anniversary with another successful capital-to-coast passage in November. Fuelling those birthday ambitions, volunteers at The Shuttleworth Collection have just completed a two-year mechanical restoration (photo above).

“Marking the 90th anniversary of Richard Shuttleworth’s first participation in the Brighton Run will be very special for all involved in keeping The Collection alive in his memory,” said Stuart Gray, Vehicle Manager at the Shuttleworth Trust who will be among those driving the Panhard in November. “I’m sure it will be a proud – yet emotional – day as we picture a hugely enthusiastic young Richard jumping behind the wheel of this very car back in 1928.”

Before being acquired by Shuttleworth – and adding further to the Panhard’s remarkable history – it is reputed to have been originally built as a racer and to have finished fourth in the 1898 Paris to Amsterdam race driven by Chevalier Réné de Knyff covering the 890 miles at an average speed of 24mph.

In 1901 the car was re-bodied by Messrs. Morgan and Sons in its current Broughton style and, thereafter, was first owned by Lord Rochschild family. It is also said to have been driven into Ascot by King Edward VII.

GET YOUR KICKS ON ROUTE 66... VIA REGENT STREET!

• Illinois Office of Tourism partners with the Regent Street Motor Show to showcase America’s most famous highway
• Chance to win a holiday to Illinois, the start of Route 66
• Cars and bikes from the past and present
• Celebrations, street entertainment and more…

Two of the world’s most famous thoroughfares will be reunited in central London come the first Saturday in November when the Illinois Office of Tourism returns as title partner to this year’s Regent Street Motor Show, now retitled as the Illinois Route 66 Regent Street Motor Show.

While Regent Street is renowned as the capital’s premier shopping destination, Illinois is the start of America’s iconic Route 66. Immortalised in both rock and roll history and global car culture, America’s epic ‘Mother Road’ in its original form stretched for almost 2,500 miles from Chicago to Santa Monica in California.

In comparison Regent Street’s length of less than a mile may seem somewhat insignificant but with its curving John Nash design, it boasts incredible history and royal patronage being named after George, the Prince Regent, later King George IV. It was completed in 1825 almost exactly 100 years before Route 66 was established in 1926.

Over time, both highways have witnessed incredible changes in motoring history, so it is fitting that the two, once again, will be wedded together on Saturday, 3rd November when Regent Street is closed to through traffic and the road is filled with hundreds of cars of all ages for the free-to-view Illinois Route 66 Regent Street Motor Show, a Royal Automobile Club event.

Cory Jobe, Director of the Illinois Office of Tourism, said: “We are really excited to bring Illinois and Route 66 back to the Regent Street Motor Show in 2018, as title sponsor. Our partnership with this premier motoring event is a fantastic opportunity for our team to showcase both historic and new attractions along the Illinois section of Route 66 – a top destination for international visitors. From the iconic Route 66 ‘Begin’ sign in Chicago to the Route 66 Hall of Fame and Museum in Pontiac and the Original Historic Brick Road in Springfield through to The Mill on 66, a cherished restaurant which has recently reopened in Lincoln after more than a decade of renovation – Route 66 provides a chance to travel back in time.”

Illinois will be on Regent Street as the title partner, promoting holidays to the State and raising the profile of Route 66 by showcasing iconic and recently added attractions of the Route and giving away maps and destination guides. Visitors exploring the famous road in autumn 2018 will be able to discover the Old Joliet Prison in Joliet. Dating back to 1858, the former prison, featured in movies including The Blues Brothers, has recently reopened as a museum and now offers history tours.

And one lucky visitor will be able to go one better and really get their kicks on Route 66 as Illinois will be holding an on-stand competition to win a holiday to the state, including return flights for two with Norwegian.

Much of the Illinois leg of the Mother Road is frozen in time, a 300-mile neon-lit drive through a past filled with motor inns, quirky restaurants and diners such as the new Motorheads restaurant and museum complex which features incredible Route 66 memorabilia. For starters, check out the 30-foot tall smiling spaceman called the Gemini Giant next to the newly renovated and soon to re-open iconic Launching Pad diner in Wilmington, the large Route 66 Shield Mural on the back wall of the Route 66 Hall of Fame and Museum in Pontiac, and the curious attraction of Henry’s Rabbit Ranch for equal parts entertainment, visitor centre and rabbit ranch.

Nick Wigley, CEO of organisers, Goose Live Events, said: “We are delighted to welcome Illinois back to Regent Street. Route 66 is mythical among all those with even the slightest interest in motoring, but few know that the legend is not only still alive but offers visitors a must-see historical road trip. That’s a great message we’ll be promoting to all those lucky enough to be on Regent Street on 3 November.”

More than half a million spectators enjoyed the spectacle in 2017 and among this year’s displays will be more than 100 horseless carriages from the turn of the 20th century taking part in the annual Veteran Car Concours, the day before they set off on their annual trip from London to Brighton. Adding to the pageant, many of the drivers and passengers appear in period dress

Adding further to the attractions, displays of vintage, classic, racing and even futuristic cars as well as live street entertainment will ensure there is much to savour for all ages and interests.

The Illinois Route 66 Regent Street Motor Show is a key event in the week-long London Motor Week run by the Royal Automobile Club.

Bringing the world’s top motor museums to life.

The celebrated London to Brighton Veteran Car Run provides the heartbeat to many of the greatest car collections

The famous Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run supported by Hiscox boasts many wonderful virtues. Every year, it intrigues thousands of roadside viewers with its unique history and appeal which draws eager entrants from all around the globe. It also serves to honour all those pioneering engineers for their ingeniously innovative technologies dating back to the dawn of the horseless carriage era.

Furthermore, the world’s longest running motoring event inspires a large number of museums not just to display their extraordinary veteran cars but also to keep them in perfect running order in readiness for their annual pilgrimage from capital to coast.

“It’s a unique spectacle and brings notable exhibits from our collection to life,” enthuses Stephen Laing, curator of the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust. “We need events like this to keep the cars going and it provides us with a great opportunity to involve our key trustees and also to get the cars out in front of the public.”

Now exhibited at the newly refurbished British Motor Museum at Gaydon, the Trust’s remarkable collection adds up to the world’s largest display of historic British cars – at the last count it totals more than 300 vehicles spanning classic and vintage as well as veteran eras. Around eight of these machines date back to before 1905 and thus are eligible to join the Veteran Car Run, and six are regularly entered, sometimes for high-profile participants.

Damon Hill and Charley Boorman drove the museum’s exceptional 1904 Rover 8hp (the world’s oldest surviving Rover car) in last year’s event, while Olympic rowing legend Sir Steve Redgrave jumped aboard its 1904 Thornycroft 20hp tonneau in 2014, a car driven previously by the late Sir Terry Wogan.

A few years ago the National Motor Museum in Beaulieu did likewise providing a 1904 two-seater De Dion-Bouton for TV baker Paul Hollywood, while the renowned Louwman Museum in Holland always supports the event by bringing ‘Genevieve’, the crowd-pleasing Darracq from the much-loved 1953 movie of the same name.

The Haynes Museum based in Sparkford, Somerset, is another notable supporter of the Veteran Car Run. Created on the amazing car collection amassed by motoring enthusiast and automotive manual publisher John Haynes OBE, the Museum is run as a charity with an ethos that its cars and motorbikes are made to be driven.

“Senses are only truly engaged when you see, hear and sometimes smell... ... and we’ve always prided ourselves on the work our Workshop and Restoration Centre do to persevere and restore our collection. The museum’s ethos is that cars and motorbikes are living, breathing machines,” says Deputy CEO Chris Scudds.

No surprise, then, that its 1903 Darracq Type L is a regular on the Run. It was crewed by TV ‘Wheeler Dealers’ Edd China and Mike Brewer back in 2013 and more recently by the Museum’s CEO, Chris Haynes.

Last year, it was due to be driven by Bronek Masojada, Chief Executive of Supporting Partner Hiscox Insurance, but sadly – as can be the case with a vehicle that is over 100 years old – it failed to make the start. Undaunted, Masojada will be back behind the wheel in November crossing his fingers for a trouble-free journey all the way to Madeira Drive finish in Brighton.

“The atmosphere and camaraderie of the run came to a head last year when our century old French beauty decided to take the day off. Despite test driving her just weeks before, it simply wasn’t to be,” recalls Masojada who wasn’t left stranded in London and thus still savoured the magical event’s unique appeal.

“Having hitched a lift with a fellow veteran, I can vouch for how enjoyable the Run is whether you’re behind the wheel or experiencing it as a passenger. That said, I’m hoping for a smoother ride to Brighton this time around and have no doubt the run will deliver yet another year of world-class motoring nostalgia.”

JAGUARS TO ROAR ON REGENT STREET!

• Special display featuring iconic anniversary models
• Ground-breaking XK120 sportscars joined by Mark V and XJ saloons
• Coventry Cats to sparkle in full spectrum of motoring history
• Britain’s favourite free-to-view motor show with 500,000+ visitors

A pride of prowling Jaguars will be one of the many highlights at next month’s Illinois Route 66 Regent Street Motor Show in central London on Saturday 3 November.

The presence of iconic models from one of Britain’s most loved automotive marques is sure to be a huge crowd-pleaser at the country’s most popular free-to-view motor show, a Royal Automobile Club event which last year drew more than half a million visitors to the capital’s famous thoroughfare, pedestrianised between Piccadilly and Oxford Circuses.

Organised by the ever-enthusiastic Jaguar Drivers’ Club, the special display will showcase some major milestones in Jaguar’s illustrious history with an eye-catching collection of the company’s significant models from bygone eras.

It is exactly 70 years since the seminal XK120 sportscar was first launched at the British Motor Show at Earl’s Court – just a stone’s throw from Regent Street. With an affordable price tag, stunning drop-top styling plus Jaguar’s all-new six-cylinder engine endowing the two-seater roadster with a fantastic turn of speed, the trailblazing XK120 put Jaguar on the world map.

It was clearly a busy year for the Coventry Cats at the famous Browns Lane factory as the Mark V was also introduced at Earl’s Court in 1948 – a four-door executive saloon which immediately proved popular with businessmen and even heads of state. Like the XK120, it similarly boasted a sporting pedigree, notably when scoring a Monte Carlo Rally podium in 1951.

Dazzling examples of both septuagenarians will be on Regent Street to mark their respective sapphire anniversaries, where they will be rubbing bumpers with a number of XJ saloons. First unveiled 50 years ago in 1968, the XJ has been Jaguar’s flagship model for the past five decades, offering a wonderful mix of performance, space, style and luxury. Models illustrating the XJ’s long-running evolution will add yet another head-turning dimension to this very special showcase.

Now firmly established as one of the must-attend highlights on the calendars of both car fans and Londoners, the esteemed Illinois Route 66 Regent Street Motor Show takes place on the eve of the annual Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run supported by Hiscox and provides visitors with the rare opportunity to see the full kaleidoscope of automotive history.

From the dawn of motoring, the show includes more than 100 of the remarkable pre-1905 horseless carriages as they prepare for their pilgrimage from capital to coast. Adding to the pageant, many of the drivers and passengers appear in period dress. The presence of the Jaguar anniversary collection will be one of the many features on the closed street, bringing the motoring story more up-to-date. Others include state-of-the-art electric cars from Renault, a display of modern day supercars and the latest motorbikes from Triumph.

The Illinois Route 66 Regent Street Motor Show – open from 10:30 to 16:00 – is a key event in the week-long London Motor Week run by the Royal Automobile Club.

Crawley revved up for it annual trip down Memory Lane.

London to Brighton veteran cars return for time-honoured halfway halt on High Street

As tradition dictates, Crawley High Street will once again be travelling back in time as the time-honoured halfway halt on next month’s running of the world famous Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run supported by Hiscox.

More than 120 years ago, all those motoring pioneers taking part in the original Emancipation Run in 1896 passed through Crawley’s welcoming town centre as they head south on what then was a very rudimentary A23.

Marking that milestone, on Sunday 4 November more than 400 veteran cars dating back to the dawn of motoring will once again descend on the Sussex town’s historical High Street to take a well-earned breather on their annual pilgrimage from the capital’s Hyde Park to Madeira Drive on the Sussex seaside. Once again, the visitor experience in Crawley is supported by the UK’s second largest airport and the most efficient single-runway airport in the world.

With the intrepid crews and their amazing pre-1905 horseless carriages enjoying a short ‘flying visit’ respite before tackling the tricky and steep hills of the South Downs, the notably wide expanses of central Crawley always provide the perfect free-to-view opportunity for thousands of enthusiastic visitors to see all these extraordinary Victorian and Edwardian vehicles up close.

Official partner Gatwick Airport returns with support for participants and spectators alike. The former will be provided with travel sweets and seat cushions to aid their journey down to Brighton, while the latter will be given postcards to exchange for a hot drink in the local La Rusta café located close by in The Martlets. Gatwick will also be parking a genuine veteran car on the High Street, thus providing visitors with the chance to get behind the wheel for the perfect photo opportunity (photo top left below).

Gatwick Airport’s Community Engagement Manager, Melanie Wrightson, said: “We are proud to be involved in the Veteran Car Run for the third year in a row, in what is sure to be an exciting event for everyone participating and spectating.

“Our sponsorship of the event forms part of Gatwick’s wider community engagement programme as we look forward to meeting with the local community in Crawley.”

Lined with charismatic buildings from bygone eras, Crawley High Street – now by-passed by through traffic – also marks an important stage on the Run as it’s the start of the highly-popular Regularity Time Trial, the only competitive element of the event. Finishing 13 miles away in Burgess Hill, the Regularity Time Trail requires drivers to get as close to a chosen average speed as possible.

The first cars are due to arrive in the High Street at around 8.15am with the last car leaving around 1.45pm. Full information can be found on the official website: www.veterancarrun.com
