The peace and tranquility of home life at OCC HQ was shattered recently, upon the impromptu arrival of a friend on his Ducati Cucciolo ("little puppy") motor-assisted bicycle, its 48cc engine puttering away merrily to itself within the frame of a post-war Raleigh. He owns a pair of these intriguing machines, this one has recently returned to active service while the other it still awaiting final prep.

Prior to producing mopeds and motorcycles, Ducati produced these engine conversions and designed them to be fitted to pedal cycles, introduced shortly after WW2. Interest in these bolt-on engine conversions, and lightweight autocycles in general, is gaining momentum, and by all accounts the Cucciolo is one of the more sought-after designs now. I can certainly see the appeal.

That's very neat and much better than the front wheel drive Solex solution that adds its weight at a higher level.

It always seemed to be the French which went FWD, one I remember was the PowerPak which was a high mounted RWD.
A friend at school had an, in the rear wheel, Raleigh Cyclemotor.

There is a variety on here mixed with some mopeds.

Glad you find it of interest. The machine's owner advises that I should really refer to it as a cyclemotor, as opposed to an autocycle, something to do with the latter usually having larger engines than the former.
