I've got a Lucas starter, it says M418C CC24 255986. Putting 12v across it on the bench produces no movement at all., but the case sparks if the earth is scratched against it? What should I suspect first if I dismantle it? _________________ '60 Armstrong Siddeley Star Sapphire

I would start with the brushes. If it’s from the 60s era then Lucas were messing around with the composition of the brushes and the brush would get a sort of corrosion on the wearing surfaces. I don’t know if it was only Ford that were affected at the time. I worked a a Ford main dealers in Glasgow and we had a helluva lot of starters fail. Also look for corrosion on both the end plates and the yolk.
One guy came in with a 105 Anglia and told the service receptionist “It will work if I give the door a good bang” and then proceeded to demonstrate, it started. A tap on the side with a hammer had the same effect.
