The mechanical petrol pump on my 1957 Standard 8 has given up the ghost. Has anyone replaced their old unit with an electric petrol pump; what are the problems in doing so and what electric pump do I buy?

There's not much to go wrong in the mechanical pumps. Bad diaphragm or leaky valves. Much easier to fix than replumbing for an electric pump but if you insist then any SU pump could be used There are lots of variations but the only variation that matters is whether it's a high pressure (for fitting at the tank) or a low pressure for fitting in the engine compartment.
The only difference between HP and LP is the strength of the return spring so you can easily change from one mode to the other if you have the correct spring.
