Well despite Peter's link I still don't understand the tricycle. If the conventional tractor front track is the same as the rear then you don't squash any more plants than you would with the trike and probably fewer.
Perhaps it was simply for maneuverability using the independent rear braking?

One gets up in a morning unaware of what education lies ahead.
Quote from a couple of items
Row Crop is the term used to refer to the practice of growing some crop types in regular spaced rows. A lot of vegetable and salad crops are grown in this way.
The machinery used to sow, cultivate and harvest these crops are also referred to as Row crop machinery.
The main factor with most of the machinery is the ability to adjust the wheel track width to suit the row spacings of different crop types. Some tractor types had special axles that allowed the wheels to be slid in and out. Others also had a centrally mounted front wheel (or pair of close coupled wheels) to allow easier turning into rows on the headland.
I also found text that explained how with the narrow track it was said to be easier to look along the furrow and keep one of the wheels there.
...... and then I came across an article about petrol/gasoline complete with a small carb and spark plugs being used to start the larger tractor diesel engines. I had worked with "Donkey Engines" connected to large diesels but not come across this system until today.
Diesel engines can be a little difficult to start in cold weather, remember cold weather anyone ??
