|
|
One of my cars has an age related plate, I have no documents apart from the new style V5 and a Heritage certificate confirming the year of manufacture.
Is there any way I can trace the original number from the chassis / engine number? _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |

I recall many years back when I retained the registration number on my Ford 7W, the kithead trust provided me with a taxation index card for her.
I thought they would need a registration number to go from? _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |

What about the V888 form?
Has anyone used one before for information? _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |

I have, but since the recent change to GDPR from the old Data Protection Act, the DVLA no longer consider the current owner wanting their cars history to be a good enough reason to hand it out. Even the current V5C doesn't show the previous owners details.
I have the old information for both of my Vauxhalls - I think I requested it before the DVLC (then) had thought of charging for it, but others who have tried since May have had their requests rejected. |

Looking at the V888 form there is no charge if you are the current owner. I suppose there is no harm in sending it off if its free, even if they come back with nothing. _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |

You could try but all I've heard for the last 12 months or so, is that they've pulled the plug on revealing any previous owner data, unless there's good (usually legal) reason for it. Shame.

i tried getting the data when i bought my consul and was told no way unless they have not paid a parking fine or other thing
if you have the original reg you can get some info but without it i reckon you may hit a brick wall on it
good luck though. |

Its a shame the previous owner wasn't very helpful, he said he couldn't even remember where he bought the car! _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |

I like to see original registration numbers, of course, but an age related plate doesn't bother me. Imported cars like my Dodge Brothers has one and I am quite happy with it.
The number that the licensing authorities issue does not belong to the car owner; it is the property of the DVLA. To my way of thinking, the true identity of a car is it's chassis number. I notice that many old car registers (MMM etc.) refer to the chassis, or car number rather than the registration number but if all you have is a period photo of the car then it seems a bit mean that the DVLA will no longer accept it as evidence.
People have been transferring a number to which they have become attached since the earliest days of motoring but although I don't know for sure, I assume if you buy a number it is your property?? |

I am not too bothered about the car having the age related number but there is that part of me that wants to find out some of its history. Where she was first registered and what area she would have spent her life etc. I have quite a folder for each of my vehicles and I like to research their history. Each vehicle has had a life and I like to find this out.
With this car I am presuming that with no documentation they couldn't retain the original number, it may not be a aimple case that it was transferred.
I think I am going to message the previous owner again. _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |

Hi,all, I too tried the DVLA for info by letter, also asking what the charge would be, but never even got a response. Last time I got info I think it was only a fiver. I was lucky & made contact with the second owner(1965 to 2015) & we are now in regular contact. The Zephyr, whilst in their care, carried the number SVC1 Looks good but stands for scrap vehicles collected(their business) Cheers,JD. _________________ 1958 Ford Zephyr Mk2 Convertible

I have several Heritage certificates for BMC cars, one of them (for a 1967 Minor) details the Morris dealer, the others unfortunately don't.
I don't know whether the dealer information was always recorded? or if the heritage folk choose sometimes not to add it to the certificate?
may be worth a follow up with them
