The world-famous Works 59/50B Bugatti is set to return to the Gloucestershire hill climb in May as part of the Bugatti Owners’ Club 90th anniversary celebrations.

The Works 59/50B has not appeared at Prescott in 80 years. Chris Rogers, General Manager of the Bugatti Owners’ Club said ‘We are delighted that the Works 59/50B Wimille Bugatti will make an historic return to Prescott. The Bugatti Owner’s Club and Prescott Hill Climb have played a significant role in the history of the car and its famous French driver Jean-Pierre Wimille. The car will be on display at the Bugatti Trust as part of their Summer Exhibition ‘Jean Bugatti and Jean-Pierre Wimille – Prescott 80 years ago’ which will run until September 2019’. This exceptionally historic Bugatti is on loan from the Cité de l’Automobile - National Museum – SCHLUMPF Collection. MULHOUSE (France)

In July 1939 Jean Bugatti accepted the invitation to compete at the first Bugatti Owners’ Club International meeting and brought the Works monoposto Type 59 fitted with 8-cylinder supercharged 4.7 litre type 50B engine for his works driver Jean-Pierre Wimille to drive. He was accompanied by his two mechanics Robert Aumaître and Lucien Wurmser. It had without doubt the most powerful engine built by the factory and was fitted with twin rear wheels specially for the event.

Raymond Mays, ERA achieved 46.14 secs to take first place. Wimille in his first run on the unfamiliar course achieved 47.50 secs, improving it to 46.69 secs on his second to take second place.

After the event Jean Bugatti wrote to apologise for bringing an unsuitably large car for the hill and promised the next year to bring one of his new 1-litre cars. This, of course, was not to be. Except for its single outing in 1945 in the hands of Wimille at the Coupe des Prisonniers in the Bois de Boulogne in Paris, the 59/50B was not to be driven again.

It was retained by the factory until acquired by the Schlumpf brothers for their museum and is now part of the Cité de l’Automobile - National Museum – Schlumpf Collection, the museum located in Mulhouse, France and housing the brothers’ collection.

The Bugatti Owner's Club based at Prescott Hill Climb, Cheltenham is the oldest Club for the marque in the world, founded in 1929. On the weekend of 25-26 May, the Club will host its popular annual French themed event 'La Vie en Bleu'. The spectacular two-day event is always a firm favourite on the motoring calendar and celebrates all things French & Italian and this year will be no exception. Prescott will once again be transformed into a celebration of fine French and Italian automobiles, action-packed motor racing, and a whole host of live entertainment.

The famous Molsheim marque will be well represented with a large gathering of vintage Bugattis, several Veyrons including the Supersport and Pur Sang plus its 1990’s cousin the EB110. It is anticipated that over 90 Bugattis from around the world will make a pilgrimage to Prescott, some for the first time. Fans of British racers will also be treated to a special class for ERA voiturettes.

To commemorate the significant 90th anniversary, The Bugatti Trust will also join in the festivities to celebrate the landmark year with a special exhibition. The historic Bugatti Trust Museum and Study Centre is a UK registered charity dedicated to the study of the works of Ettore Bugatti. The Bugatti Trust was formed in 1987 by the late Hugh Conway supported by a small group of Bugatti enthusiasts, it has a key objective of encouraging the next generation of engineers and designers and runs an active research, exhibition and educational outreach programme. About Prescott Hill Climb:

Prescott is owned and operated by the Bugatti Owners’ Club, it’s one of the oldest hillclimbs in the world with an illustrious racing past. Some of the greatest names in motorsport history have competed at Prescott. Seventy years ago – in May 1948 – Stirling Moss entered his first-ever hillclimb driving a Cooper Mk2. He came fourth out of 12 in the 500cc class – the rest, as they say, is history!

Prescott is regarded as one of the most prestigious motoring venues in Britain, hosting major championships, driver schools and a range of classic car and bike meetings. The Prescott estate is located in the picturesque Cotswolds just north of Cheltenham, and its 1127-yard ‘long course’ is completed in under 36 seconds by the fastest modern racing cars. The Vintage Sports-Car Club still uses the original ‘short course’ for its annual blue-riband meeting.

'La Vie en Bleu' returns to Prescott Hill Climb on Saturday 25 - Sunday 26 May. The spectacular two-day event includes a celebration of fine French and Italian cars, action-packed motor racing, and a host of entertainment.

Bugatti’s from around the world will make a pilgrimage to Prescott to mark the 90th anniversary of the Bugatti Owners’ Club including vintage Bugattis, several Veyron’s including the Supersport and Pur Sang plus its 1990’s cousin the EB110, many of which will take to the historic hill climb course over the weekend.

The Club and Prescott have played a significant role in the history of the car and its famous French driver Jean-Pierre Wimille.

In July 1939 Jean Bugatti competed at the first Bugatti Owners’ Club International meeting and brought the Works Type 59 with an 8-cylinder supercharged 4.7 litre type 50B engine driven by Jean-Pierre Wimille. In his first run Wimille achieved 47.50 secs, later improving it to 46.69 secs to take second place. After the event Jean Bugatti wrote apologising for bringing an unsuitably large car for the hill. Except for a single outing in 1945 at the Coupe des Prisonniers in Paris, the car was never driven again. The car takes centre piece at the Bugatti Trust Summer Exhibition ‘Jean Bugatti and Jean-Pierre Wimille – Prescott 80 years ago’ which runs until September. This historic Bugatti is on loan from the Cité de l’Automobile - National Museum – SCHLUMPF Collection, MULHOUSE, France.

Prescott Debut the Ex-John Surtees Ferrari 330 GT in what would’ve been the 55th anniversary of his F1 World Championship win.

John Surtees CBE became the only driver to win a World Championship on both two and four wheels. In appreciation of this achievement John was presented with this 330 GT by Enzo Ferrari. The 4 litre/3967cc V12 engined car, was used to commute between race meetings in Europe. In 1967, the car was sold to a buyer in Switzerland, moved to the USA then passed through several hands before the current owner discovered it and later learned of the Surtees history. It was repatriated to the UK in 2015 and is kept in its original patina.

The oldest Bugatti racing car in the world to attend.

The 1912 Bugatti Type 18 ‘Garros’ 5-Litre chain drive racing car is the oldest Bugatti racer in the world, as driven by a young 30-year-old Ettore Bugatti himself. Only three are known to exist with this example being the first built, and Ettore Bugatti’s own car. They were produced from 1912 to 1914 and were one of the most important Bugattis of the pre-war era and one of the first street-legal race cars! With a top speed of 100mph and one of the fastest vehicles in the world attracting the attention of aviation pioneer, Roland Garros, one of only seven customers for these 5.0-litre, 100hp road rockets.

Former Bernie Ecclestone Lamborghini Miura.

Widely regarded as the first supercar of the modern era. This was the first road-going mid-engined car and was the fastest production car in the world, with a top speed of 280kph, after the car’s launch a Lamborghini employee was instructed to simply rev the engine in Casino Square, Monte Carlo; he came away with 17 orders! From Frank Sinatra to Jay Kay, several stars have owned one, and yet there were only 764 built. The model attending was owned by Bernie Ecclestone and more historically – the car is better known for launching Twiggy’s modelling career.

Duncan Pittaway returns to demonstrate the 1911 Fiat S76 land speed record contender 'Beast of Turin'.

The flame- throwing 28.5-litre Fiat S76 engine is capable of providing an impressive 300bhp at 1800 RPM - enough to propel the car to 116 mph and achieve a one-mile land speed record in 1911. ‘Beast’ by name, ‘Beast’ by nature - not just how it roars into motion, but how it handles. Watch Duncan tame it on the hill!

The Fiat S76, known as the Beast of Turin is the one surviving example of a pair of land speed record contenders built in 1910 to beat the land speed record, held at the time by Blitzen-Benz. After WWI Fiat dismantled one machine to prevent rival manufacturers obtaining its technical secrets, while the other was purchased by Russian aristocrat Boris Soukhanov. In 2003 engineer Duncan Pittaway hunted down the remains, he managed to obtain the chassis from Australia and track down the S76 engine from its sister car that was dismantled by the automaker. Referring to original drawings and photographs Pittaway and his team rebuilt the powerful automobile over a period of almost 13 years!
