That is appaling! First the registration number is flogged then the rest is wasted.

That's just not right.
The condition of the car in those first photos is lovely, who on earth would want to break that up. _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |

Well he hasn't justified his actions by giving an excuse, so I'd say it's exactly what it seems. _________________ Richard Hughes |

I suppose if you visit a discussion forum you should engage in a clear way or accept that people may come to their own conclusions. All I can say is that Peter has been around Austin Sevens for as long as I have and presumably something catastrophic must have happened which he feels unable to talk about.
There is obviously a lot more to this but, personally, I will reserve judgement until I know all the facts. |

Reading the response there does seem to be more to it and not simply just stripping it. I suppose at the end of the its up to the person who owns the vehicle.
In saying that though I do still think its a shame.
Something sort of similar on a Commer forum recently, a nice little Commer Superpoise truck being stripped for spares, very restorable in my opinion. I asked the seller was it too rough to restore and he came back to me with 'no, but I have plans for the chassis on something else'. _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |

I can't think what would justify this action and I will not reverse my judgement on the basis of "I have personal reasons for my actions".

In the end it's up to the person who owns the vehicle to do with it whatever he wishes, but I can't help feeling that for most of us it would be unacceptable otherwise he would be more open as to its final fate. _________________ old tourer

Agreed, as I said in post #1 - their car, their choice, but I've seen many many bodyshells for sale on ebay over the years, where everything but the chassis, axles, engine and other items of running gear are being retained - and 9 times out of 10 for predictable reasons I bet.

Will the new restrictions on exemptions etc slow the making of specials and rodders I wonder? _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |

Heated rodders probably.
Specials?
Much will depend on the special, and what or how it is made?
For that, we come probably under the DVLA points system for registration.
I have, on my 'site', a Ford Pop rolling chassis. It has a V5.
I have a Ford 10HP engine, and many Ford gearboxes that are appropriate.
I also have [in pieces] an Ashley 1172 glass fibre bodyshell.
If I put them all together, [as per GB Wake?] I don't expect to have over much trouble changing the Pop V5 from saloon, to 2 seater sports.....
After all, it's what was done back in the 1950's and 1960's.
But I have little or no intention of upgrading the engine, transmission or running gear...
Inspection by DVLA would be welcome [to check it is what I say it is?]
Whether it would be allowed to be MoT exempt is another matter....and no real hardship. _________________ Dellow Mk2, 1951 built, reg 1952.

My understanding of the DVLA rules for vehicles with separate chassis are that as long as the chassis remains unchanged and the suspension axles and engine are as original then the body is irrelevant. _________________ old tourer

From DVLA
To Keep the original registration number
Your vehicle must have 8 or more points from the table below if you want to keep the original registration number. 5 of these points must come from having the original or new and unmodified chassis, monocoque bodyshell or frame.
Part Points
Chassis, monocoque bodyshell (body and chassis as one unit) or frame - original or new and unmodified (direct from manufacturer) 5
Suspension (front and back) - original 2
Axles (both) - original 2
Transmission - original 2
Steering assembly - original 2
Engine - original 1
Get a ‘Q’ registration number
You will not be able to keep your vehicle’s original registration number if one of the following applies:
it has fewer than 8 points
it has a second-hand or altered chassis, monocoque bodyshell or frame
there’s evidence that 2 vehicles have been welded together to form one (ie ‘cut and shut’) _________________ old tourer
