Hi all,

Four of these unusual old flight certificates, one for each member of the Earl family from Sydney, Australia, turned up in a shop. It would appear that the King Neptune "Order of Equatorial Air Voyagers" certificates were awarded to any passenger on a Qantas flight, that happened to cross the equator.



The certificates are dated 15th March 1950. Having look around online, the airline gave out these certificates for a number of years, changing the overall design from time to time.

In this case the aircraft's registration was VH-EBM, which saw use on a number of different Qantas aircraft over the years. In the early 1950s, it was applied to a Douglas DC-4, which - twelve years later - crashed off the coast of Italy. Has anyone here ever been given one of these, or something similar by an airline in the past?

Was Qantas allied with BOAC at the time?

My understanding was that Empire Airways was the predecessor of BOAC. I worked with a guy in Canada who had been a pilot on Empire Airways flying boats. He told me that the route to OZ and the Far East was via Egypt tho’ I can’t remember which port.

There’s also a reference to BOAC under the Quantas Empire Airways
