This was my first venture into crack testing.

I have read numerous reports of spindle failure on MG TCs so with the hubs removed to replace the king pins and bushes I took the opportunity of crack testing them.

The kit consists of three cans. 1) a cleaner; 2) penetrant; 3) developer.

Following the instructions: (Wearing rubber gloves; a face mask and goggles.)

First I cleaned the part with particular attention to the underside radius area where the pin joins the upright.

Secondly I sprayed on the penetrant and left for at least 10 minutes.

Finally, I cleaned off the dye and applied the developer. Having left this to dry I inspected the suspect area.

In this case I found no sign of cracking - so that was a relief.

Hi Ray, didn't realise this stuff was still available. We used to use the same(or similar) on crankshafts in the late '50s. Brought back some memories, cheers,JD.

If you are checking for cracks on a cylinder head or block , you can fill it up with kerosene or paraffin . I am assuming that you have it dismantled . It will find its way out of a crack , maybe cheaper than getting an " expert " to do it !

I still have the other side to do yet!

These MGs were quite prone to spindle failure so fingers crossed!
