Well that was an eventful weekend. Our fist outing in the Commer lorry did not go to plan.
She drove very well for the fist 20 mins but that was about it. From then on every 3-4 miles she would cook up. It took us 2.5 hours to travel the 25 miles to the show, even worse on the way home we had to tow her for the last 10 miles and got back home just after 10pm!
Back to the drawing board we think, back in the shed give it a week or two and then start fault finding again.

She has a new thermostat, the fan belt is nice and tight, the radiator has been flushed and heats up all round nicely, inlet and out let pipes heat up correctly showing the thermostat is working, the oil level is correct and the water level is correct.

She just seems to overheat after every 10 mins, we leave her to cool for 10 mins and then she will go again.

Any ideas?

Maybe take the core plugs out and scoop out any crud if you haven't already been there.

Head gasket? Probably a tiny track twixt cylinder and water jacket? Tiny, because it happens only when hot?

Does it have a watter pump?

It does have a water pump.

One thing we noted was that when she started getting hot there was a banking noise that got louder the hotter she got until she reached a point where she would cut out. It was not tappet noise. I did wonder about the water pump but we also wondered whether it was a valve.

At the end of the journey though after she cut out we touched the radiator cap and it was cold!?! On the way down she would steam and you couldn't touch it.

Air lock?

For a valve, why not try a quick compression test?

If the rad cap was cold then it looks like an air lock

We went back down the yard last night and moved her back in the shed, lots of moving about and she didnt overheat.
Upon checking the rad cap was cold as was the radiator, we think the banging was an air lock so we will bleed the system as a starter. She was also missing and popping the hotter she got so the timing is not right.

Rootes, I know you have done a lot of work on the thermostat but are you sure the element is opening?

It was opening correctly and working properly but on our way home that all changed. The pipework coming off stayed cold and the system makes a banging noise.

Our assumption is it either has an airlock or is now seized in the closed position. One benefit of the thermostat housing that I designed is that it is in two parts for ease of removal and inspection.

Before we headed for home we did take the radiator cap off and top up the coolant, we did not bleed the system. That I think was the mistake.
