Hi all
I have just purchased a 1951 Daimler Consort DB18, 1 previous keeper and whilst not in show condition it is completely original, I can’t find any rust or rust repairs, no filler anywhere, chassis is good (covered in chassis black) battery needs replacing (in the deal) and they put a jump pack on and it started instantly and sounds really sweet👍🏻
So far so good but does anyone have any tips or advice on this model or on classic car ownership in general?

Thanks in advance

Graham

Hello and welcome. I know very little about Daimler’s of that age but can recommend the Daimler Lanchester owners club (DLOC) if you search dloc.co.uk they have a very good forum.

Welcome to the forum.

Apologies for this rather obvious reply but do all the routine service jobs. Drain and replace engine, fluid flywheel, gearbox, rear axle and top-up steering box oils and renew the engine oil filter. Grease all the nipples and wheel bearings paying special attention that the grease is actually getting to parts such as the king pins where the passages can get blocked. Drain the coolant and replace with appropriate antifreeze mix.

Remove the wheels and check all the tyres for damage and whilst you have the wheels off take the drums off and check the brake linings and look for any fluid leakage or oil contamination of the linings. Check the level in the master cylinder.

If the leather seats show any signs of cracking then give them a generous application of Hide Food.

You will find that all the threads are BSF (or Whitworth in aluminium) so you will need appropriate spanners.

Try to get original workshop manual and parts lists.

Like others here we are keen to see photos inside and out.

Peter.

p.s. Rather like Brexit you will find that there are two very strongly held positions on this forum regarding lubricants. I am very strongly in favour of modern fully synthetic oils. Others prefer to use mineral oils.

May I also welcome you to the forum. I love these cars although life has conspired against me ever owning one. You are elevated to the luxury class with a Daimler but what makes them different is undoubtedly the Wilson pre selector gearbox and fluid flywheel. What looks like a clutch is in fact the gear change pedal which is depressed and released following gear selection which is done by moving a lever in a quadrant behind the steering wheel. It is placed nicely for a gentle and quite small movement with your right hand. If you haven't driven one before the experience is a bit of a challenge but once familiar with it you should find it a delight.

Don't be worried about stories of complexity; the gearboxes are no where near as complicated as an automatic and quite robust. Usually pre selector gearboxes suffer minor problems and are just needing some adjustment. Don't worry; there is plenty of advise and information from Club members.

Another wonderful feature is the quiet 2.5 litre straight six OHV (overhead valve) engine. The sheer amount of torque means the car will quite happily perform in any gear.

Brakes and steering should be pretty good if the car has been properly maintained.

A feature of these cars which I like is the sumptuous leather and walnut interior. A flat floor and large glass area give the feeling of space and comfort.

Enjoy.

I think I sent you a link to tips about posting images within the joining email. Basically, you upload pics to a photo hosting site, such as flickr or imgur.com, and link to there in posts you make here. Pretty straightforward once you've signed up on either of them.
