I was just reading about that, so sad. I wonder how he ended up on the motorway?

Hi
He would have needed to keep right here in order to stay on the A23.

So it is possible he could have been prevented from keeping out by a bunch of bullies on the last 1/4 mile which looks like a single lane for all intents and purposes and would not have allowed them room to overtake.

It is sad, I wonder what part other 'modern' drivers had to play in this?

The other vehicle involved was a ten-ton lorry; the veteran ended up against the central reservation.

Having got onto the M23 instead of the A23 he would have encountered a very nasty lane change to avoid the M25.

Very sad.
A shame that some media are already claiming the drivers age was in some way the reason for this terrible event.
Our thoughts should of the relatives who must be traumatised by what has happened.

Changing lanes at a place like this in a modern is challenging some times, imagine in a car this age.

The chaps age need not be brought into it, its just a way of glorifying it.

I fear that if the National media runs with this story it could escalate out of proportion. This is a desperately sad situation for friends and family of those involved and it does not help when speculation is spread around in the absence of hard facts.

It looks as if that is just what happened, that 600 yd sign is in this streetview and so is the lane split with the extra white paint between lane 1,2 and 3,4..

Condolences to all concerned. It's absolutely shocking, the driver's age is irrelevant in terms of the legality of him being on the road. We should all be able to drive our cars, of any vintage (term used loosely), with impunity. Sadly, I think the massive increase in the volume of cars in the South East and the declining standards of driving and lack of courtesy mean that to me, this event must have road closures and marshalling.

This is of course perfectly feasible because they close roads in London and Surrey every year for a big cycle ride so it could easily be done for the London to Brighton run.

Of course, we all know there's not a cat's hope in hell of that happening. Sadly...

As it happens, there are about 400 volunteer Marshalls along the 60 mile LB route every year. Clearly there should have been better signage and Marshalling at this point but there are several aspects of this incident that no doubt the Police will be looking at.

There was also nearly another nasty accident. I joined in and drove part of the route in my pre war Morris. On the outskirts of Brighton I saw a taxi reverse across the road, straight into the path of a pair of the three wheeled participants (possibly Ariels?) who were travelling together. One of them shouted a warning and took evasive action, the car stopped abruptly and one of them managed to just squeeze through the resulting tight gap.I don't think he had much in the way of brakes. it looked a very close thing.
