Yea did it come to pass that the Old-nails Somerset was put up for sale.

It hath lain upon his driveway these last months awaiting Old-Nail to do unto it that which is required, but Alas! Old-nail is as the prodigal son,
and hath now begat himself a BSA that will be the ruin of him. Thus the Somerset sits, unto itself and unloved.



Verily she is a solid and hearty vehicle with hardly any of ye orange blight that doth affect metal, let it be known that she runneth and driveth,
and wouldst be a loyal friend to whomsoever would take an interest.

Old-nail hath removeth her modesty by unclothing her inside, and hath sinned by issuing many false promises of rejuvination.



Let he that hath stout heart and garage space step forth, for theirs will be the Somerset and all it's parts. According to 'The book of Blair' it hath sorn,

The BSA, a BMW R80, the 2cv, and my trusty VW Passat estate completes the picture, I sold the Audi A4 I bought recently on Sunday (at an £800 loss) and the wife's car the week before.

The drive looks enormous now!

The Somerset is a good solid car but I must face the fact that I have neither the time nor the temperament to put it back in service, as I write it is pouring with rain outside (summer) and the odds of me ever getting the work done like this are nil.

The 2cv will follow the Somerset as Mrs nail and I have had what you might term 'a full and frank discussion' regarding my spending!

This last year alone I have spent £17,000 on vehicles apparently!

So what you're saying is:

1. you've made a lot of space
2. you're under instructions not to spend much more

so the obvious outcome to my thinking is buy a nice Morris lorry, such as an MRA for instance, takes up the room of several vehicles in one go - so you can't buy lots more vehicles - and it runs, and adds value to the house due to its style and attractive lines. Win win methinks!!

I moved from Bolton 2 years ago and now live in Leyland which is only 15 miles away but altogether more pleasant.

I knew Fred Dibnah, not well, but well enough to 'nod' to each other when our paths crossed, he was certainly a 'barm-pot!'

I don't take much interest in the goings on down there in Bolton buzzy, you see Fred was a good mate of my uncle who was also a Bolton steeple-jack, together they climbed Bolton's highest chimney at Barrow bridge to put some knickers at the top like a flag!

Fred's ex-wife Allison is a very good friend of my ex-wife and was always round at ours in the past, and his latest and last wife is my Dad's best mates daughter!

I think I get that, easily confused tonight for some reason, wish i had of met him, I often have dibnah days, I am routinely compared to him, saying that I think very much like him, I think that is a compliment!

Your Uncle, bet he has some great stories!

My mum and dad keep being told that they have a victorian son, the only thing that is really modern is the net, and I love that as I can research old stuff!

Carry on being an individual buzzy, it gives a man character.

It's good that someone still quite young can appreciate old technology, especially in today's 'throw-away' age.

What people today don't seem to realise is that Blacksmiths, Wheelrights, Carters, Civil and mechanical engineers, even Architects in former times were Artists, they honed their skills and produced quality items as individual as themselves.

If you are considered 'Victorian' then I should take that as a compliment!

Some years ago erindoors and I tracked down Mr Dibnah at a steam event, and I asked him to sign a copy of his book (that I just happened to have with me). Instead of a quick scrawl, he carefully dedicated the book to us in a Victorian style script, and there's even a sooty fingerprint to boot!

Hopefully someone on TV will pick up the mantle and continue with industrial archaeology type programmes.
