I'm especially appealing to owners/former owners here. What is the most important thing to look for when buying one of these gorgeous things? I want one really, really badly!!!

Hi XL, you're on my wavelength with this one Smile

My first S1 was a '72 XJ12L, then later I had a sheddy (but MOTd) S1 Daimler Sovereign 4.2, and later still a tidy S1 4.2 XJ6. I did a little writeup about buying these cars a while ago, see:

http://www.oldclassiccar.co.uk/buyers_guide_xj.htm

Might give you some pointers to start with!!!! theres a house only a couple of hundred yards up from me, with various old XJs parked in the paddock out the back, keep meaning to knock on his door and be nosey

Blimey!! Can I come with you Rick??!!

Would you say that ones without a valid MOT are to be avoided?

Hehe I think the ones up the road are pretty ropey Rolling Eyes Smile

Non MOTd cars? it depends, if it has been stored in the dry then a non-MOTd car could be a viable project. If left outside I wouldn't bother to be honest, the cost to rejuvenatate one that has suffered badly could be eyewatering. With prices of even decent MOTd ones being quite reasonable, I think (unless you want a full-on project that is) I'd suggest buying as good an example as possible, and ideally see it in the metal before bidding, if its on ebay Cool

Theres a scrappy over nr Wrexham that used to have lines of S1-3 XJs in it, I think its still there so the old Jags probably are too! handy for bits. Plus I know of a place that has stacks of NOS S1 bonnets and bootlids, plus a few doors, which is always handy to know.

This one has especially caught the eye Rick:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=020&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=300119713883&rd=1&rd=1

Lovely colours (in my opinion), Webasto and a manual with O/D. Front wings don't look too clever though. Do the wings have to be cut away for sill jobs? It looks like they have but I thought they were bolt-on?

Yup the wings have had sections let into them haven't they, and its bubbling up again. Yes front wings bolt on. The sill jobs he mentions (but doesn't show in the photos) probably relate to either the front end of the sills (behind the wheels), or else at the back. Favourite rot spot is inboard of the backend of the sill, where the rear trailing arms pick up, so maybe this has had MOT plating too.

At the very least these areas would need a good looking at, as well as the spare wheel well under the boot floor, plus rear arches (often repaired, often using poorly fitting repro panels), top of the wings around the filler caps, door bottoms, bonnet lower front edge where the hinge mounts, and also inner wings and battery tray.

Well I suppose a presentable S1, MOTd, with manual box, for under £1k doesn't sound far wrong, but always a big risk buying unseen. I bought my last one on ebay from a guy in London, it was more or less in the condition described, but ebay cars never seem to be better than described, so I always assume there will be more problems than described Smile

coo thats a beauty isnt it!! I prefer the Jaguar V12 grille as opposed to the chunkier Daimler version, but thats just being picky Wink Smile

I bought a set of VdP woodwork to go in my S1 XJ12, didn't get around to fitting it though Rolling Eyes

Just to prove that E-Bay still produces the odd bargain, I paid £246-41, sight unseen for this Daimler 4.2 in November 2005. Off the road for 15 year, it was a lovely car that the guy had lost interest in. The photo was taken Bank Holiday Monday 2006, after I'd run it for 6 months. needed a bit of welding (but not much) ,the bumpers , exhaust etc putting back on and some TLC! I added the wheels because I loved them!

Had to sell it to finance some folly or other, (mortgage, food or somesuch) but miss it desperately.

BTW, Mrs & Miss Mytocon, the girls in the photo, were not part of the deal, but sometimes I do wonder if E-bay is missing a catagory or two.. Wink

Wow that doesn't look half bad, very straight down the sides etc!

My cheapest S1 XJ6 was a Daimler too, spied by my bro' at the side of a road with For Sale in the window. Naturally I enquired and found out that it still had an MOT (despite looking scruffy as a anything), asking price 200 quid! I bought it, ran it for a while but because erindoors wasn't keen on the fauna and flora rising up from the remains of the rear seat material, I sold it on, and didn't lose £ anything for a change!
