This epic restoration has been mentioned within other threads, largely by XL391, but really deserves its own thread.

558 has been stored at Bruntingthorpe since the Vulcan was retired in 1993 from the display circuit. The last few years has seen a big push and renovation programme, designed to see this mighty machine back in the air.

More info available here, and info on how you can support this project:

Cheers Rick! You're right, it certainly does deserve it's own thread! You can view the action live on the hangar webcams here. There will be some exciting stuff to see over the next few days/weeks with the refitting of the nose, the ejection seats, the canopy, lowering her off the jacks, and, next week, engine runs!!!

Also, please feel free to join the excellent forums, regularly updated by the engineers themselves, to ask any questions that you may have about any aspect of this amazing aircraft. Wink

I've got some photos on here that feature Vulcans (among others), sent to me a while back, might be of interest:

I'm lead to believe that 558's radome (nosecone) is going back on today. Use the link in my post above to watch it live on the hangar webcams. Wink

Here are a couple of pics showing the canopy fitment.

This one from starboard during fitment:

And this one from port showing the canopy in place:

In the next few days, or even the next few hours, she will be getting XM603's radome fitted, which was removed from 603 @ Woodford Tuesday lunchtime so she can start her engine runs while her own radome is prepped for flight.

Just a quick update for anyone interested, the radome from XM603 has now been fitted to XH558 so that she can now start her ground engine runs, as can be seen in these 3 views taken yesterday. There has also been a warning sent from Bruntingthorpe regarding test flights between the dates of 20th August 2007 to the 7th September 2007. Not long now!!!

Also, here is the engineering update:

Next August Engineering Update
Friday, August 10, 2007 - TVOC
Words & Pictures by Taff Stone

A momentous week as we now have all the components back, so we can finish off all the required functionals and in celebration we held a little BBQ.

Another week gone, is it me or is the more hours you put in the shorter the week becomes? Well what has happened this week not a lot really, we have managed to complete the work required for the Red Slab Radar, fit all of the motors to the PFCUís and managed to start them all, rebuilt the hydraulic system and completed the Undercarriage tests ready to be lower off jacks next week, oh I nearly forgot we fitted the Canopy as well!

The last of the 21 Fire Bottles (there use to be 35!) are now fitted and checked and weíve managed to colour in some more of our functional chart. As most of the functionals are now complete a lot of the time is being taken up with everybodyís favourite pastime paperwork, with over 1,500 work cards left to complete, cross refer and sign off. Well thatís it for another week and Iíll speak to you all next week, happy viewing!

cooo can't wait to see that back in the air, will be something else to see that. Shame that the Woodford Vulcan is getting the chop, but at least parts from it will help 558.

She'll be helping quite a few of the statics around the country as well, not least XL319 @ Sunderland. 603 will be gone in 12 months and so will Woodford itself not long after... Sad

Crying or Very sad so it Woodford definitely for the chop? what do they do there, at one time it was 146/RJ and ATP production, but that was some time ago. Guess it'll be turned over to housing - more identikit boring modern houses crammed together Rolling Eyes

That is exactly what it's going to be Rick. They're currently developing the new version of the Nimrod and when that is finished, ( which can't be too far off now ), I believe that is it for the place. It should be a heritage monument, the aircraft that have left there. 6 Lancasters a DAY during the War!! But that is one of the reasons behind the demise of 603 apparently... Sad

Hi
Does anyone know what became of 903?
I worked at Filton when it had the Olympus 593 slung underneath it.

There was also 894 which had another engine (Was it the TSR2 engine) slung underneath.
