I was thinking of retaining the original idea of a single seater - maybe use one of those new-fangled pedal/electro motors fo uphill struggles & a 'glass bodyshell....
Any vehicle could be open to interpretation, but 30's/40's/50's & 60's would certainly work.
They'd have to be convertibles, though.

Always good to see another J40. I had one when i was 1 and have real strong legs now. My dad has just finished restoring it after beeing in the shed for 20 years (the car, not my dad).

The easy way would be to start with an old dodgem car body.
If you were determined to make your own how about a Austin (Nash) Metropolitan, or the Jensen bodied A40 Sports. |

I had that thought in mind - using a Dodgem body - but then I got to thinking that it might be better to do something completely unique.
Okay, bear with me. Here's the idea...
First, decide what car to replicate. I had thought about a convertible, but a hard top isn't out of the question.
Build whatever it is to 1/3 scale & make it a single seater pedal car for an adult.
Remember Bugsy Malone? Or those 4-seater pedal thingymabobs at the seaside?
It's certainly do-able.
As for what car, I like the idea of something 30's/40's, either British or American.
All panels would have to be hand-made, which is why I thought 30's/40's, as a lot of glass was flat. I know I'm getting into weight issues, but if the panels are aluminium & the seat is plastic...
Where's my drawing board...? _________________ Don't run your fingers over my truck & I won't run my truck over your fingers!

I've renamed the thread slightly to make it a general J40 discussion thread.
As hinted at in the other thread, my long-term hunt for a J40 concluded yesterday. I'd known about two J40s for some time only 15 or so miles from here, and yesterday I finally managed to go and see them.
The red one has had a pro paintjob some time in the distant past, plus re-chromed bits and is generally in very fine nick. Just needs lamp lenses and a back bumper. The Austin badges are non-original.
The cream one has had a more workmanlike paintjob in the previous owners' shed, still very presentable mind and probably more suited to actually being used and driven into things from time to time!! Again it needs lenses and back bumper. This is an earlier J40, made from heavier gauge steel than the red one. The previous owners have a Flying A for the bonnet, but can't find it, so hopefully that'll turn up sometime or other.
I wasn't planning to buy two, but it seemed sensible to have one that Harley can drive when he's a little older, and another to make perfect and display somewhere, well I thought it made sense anyway....
I'll take fresh piccies once I've replaced the headlamp lenses.
RJ
PS does anyone know what type of switch is fitted to the top left of the dash?

Hmm, I now find my self slightly jealous of young Harley! hehe
Very nice mind you, just make sure you don't total the red one in a few years, when you are both racing down the driveway! hehe
Cheers

Are the lights working ones?
If so I would suggest either a pushpull or a toggle switch for the lights. |

They need re-wiring but originally the horn and front lamps would work yes, I've seen a simple up/down Lucas switch fitted to a J40, but I'll probably end up buying the book to find out for definite what it should have.
