Hello there this is my first tentative steps into the forum areana. So a question for the knoledgeable masses. I have a friend who has this car locked away and knows very little about it. It was registered as a mostyn special in 1956 and has a 2600cc four cylinder supercharged engine. it has a steel tubular chassis and fibre glass body and the badge says 8 SMD. Any one know anything about the car??

interesting car - the fibreglass body reminds me of a bodyshell from the 1950s. I used to own a few fibreglass specials (different than this one mind) and this looks like another one from the same era that was on sale. But I could be miles out a bit tricky to tell from this view.

The car was built by Monty Mostyn. Monty had a garage in Whitton, near Twickenham, Middlesex, I thought at the time that it was one of the best specials I had ever seen, it performed very well and I still think that it was a great looking car! From memory I think that the original registration number was MM1, although I believe that this number was transferred onto "the family car". Again, from memory I think that the motor was from a Ford Zephyr 6 with a Blower attached? Monty had a partner whose name I can't remember, the garage they owned became a Fiat Dealership under their ownership, I lost touch with Monty in the sixties when I moved my home and car business out of the area. Enjoy your Mostyn Special as much as Monty did, and good luck with the project.

I hope so too, I would love to see the car when I am next in the UK. The garage in Whitton was called Speedwell Motors.

Form the photo the car appears to have an Austin A90 or Austin-Healey 100/4 engine. The A90 had such a low first gear ratio that it was deemed useless in the Healey so they masked it off and fitted an overdrive. The interior photo appears to show a quadrant gear change rather like a preselector gearbox but perhaps this combined the functions of gear change and overdrive switch.

Peter

p.s. Ah! It seems my guess as regards the preselector lever was wrong....

As alluded to in the above forum it looks as if that the car used a variant of the Arnolt Bristol body (& chassis??)

Pictures posted thanks for the help!

The last picture of the three (all taken last year) is of the creator of this marvellous car, Monty Mostyn who hadn't seen it since selling in the 1960's

What a cracker, I love the shape of that. Tracking down its builder must have made for some interesting conversations.
