Just a quick update, The body is coming on well and the engine is nearly ready to fire up! We are told that you need a timing jig to set the points up? Does anyone know where to get one? Or am I asking a bit much?!!
My camera has given up the ghost so no pics at the mo` but as soon as I get sorted out I will post some more. Smile
Finally if anyone is looking for one of these trucks this looks like a nice one with a low estimated price.

Jon,

Is this a V8 with the dual points distibutor?
When I worked at a Ford dealership in the early 60s we had a machine that we had to install the distibutor into and set the points. Now I never ever got use it (A) 'cos V8s were rare and (B) It was the foreman's baby. I would think tho' that the same job could be done using a dwell meter. From memory you insulate one set of points and adjust the other. I'll have a look and see if I've got any info in my old books.

Jon,

I have an old engineers' pocket book that says (for the '36/'37 30 HP), the points gap is .014" to .016" for Lucas and 'small cam'. (Large cam .012" to .014"). Ignition Timing Indication = Offset-drive (I assume this means the usual 'big D' 'little D' at the drive end of the distributor). Ignition Timing = 4 degrees BTDC (Lucas = 10 degrees BTDC). Does your engine use the pin thru' the timing case method to set TDC?

I'm still looking for an old manual that might cover the dwell method of point setting.

It`s been a fine week if your a duck .. or restoring vehicles, I mean what else can you do in a wet and horrible week? The little fordson has come on well in the last few months, body built and best of all we got it running today!
After thinking about the dual points ignition system we decided to go for an electronic unit, expensive but it all fits in the original distributor and as it will be fairly hard to get at once the bonnet etc is fitted, hopefuly it should just work without needing any attention! The last time it was started was in the 60`s and today it started as if it had run yesterday, very pleasing and it sounded sweet Very Happy

The cab is all welded, repaired and waiting for some paint, I will try to post some pics in a couple of days.

Hi, It`s been a while since my last post but we have been getting on with things! Over the bank holiday we managed to get the cab painted and today we got it back on the chassis.


At last it`s beginning to look like a truck again! There`s still plenty to do and we still haven`t located a windscreen frame yet but it`s heading in the right direction ...

Hi Rick,
It was blasted, repaired, 2K primed then a coat of as near as we could get to the original brown primer followed by 2K topcoat. It will eventually be 1200 flatted and polished (the pictures are just gun finish!)

I was interested to find this discussion as I have just bought an E88W. It is a 1938 model and was a complete barn find, along with a one owner from new E83W, both have stood for at least the last 35 years.

The E88W is pretty much complete (except engine parts Distributor, water pump, fuel pump, sump etc.), showing 31,000 miles and obviously needs quite a lot of work.
I'd be interested to hear from any other owners, in fact any information would be gratefully accepted.

I actually got the E83W running on Sunday last (National Drive it Day) so I did my bit by driving it around the garden

I've got too many projects already as it is but these two were just too good to miss so I'm squeezing them in... how may times have I said that!
