G'day folks!

I'm new to this forum from Perth, Western Australia. I have been an old car nut all my life and currently own 5 oldies between 1926 and 1971.

1926 Chrysler series 60 tourer. Five year, ground up restoration. It had it's rebirth October 2007.

1928 Morris Cowley "widetrack" tourer. This is an older restoration (like 25 years ago!) and really needs a lot of TLC, despite still being licenced.

1932 Austin Seven RN Sedan. This one was reborn early this year after a five year ground-up restoration.

1950 Austin A40 tourer. These were built in Australia and were not available in the UK. I bought this one from the original owner's deceased estate in Melbourne in 1972. It has been rebuilt mechanically several times, but has never had the body off.

1971 VW lowlite Kombi. My father bought this one new and it's just stayed in the family.

It's good to find an active forum with such a wide range of cars!

Regards - Keith D

Thanks for the welcome folks.

The great thing about having such a diverse group of vehicles is that each one is totally different to drive.

The A40 is the one that I use most. It is on full licence and I just jump in and drive wherever and whenever. I used it as a daily driver into the City for years, but being an open car, you cannot lock it up. It has been all over Western Oz during the last 36 years. The kombi is also on full licence and my wife and I use this for forrays into the bush or down the coast.

The Chrysler has a big 6 cylinder flathead motor that is all torque! Into top gear at about 8mph and just leave it there! It is fitted with 4 wheel hydraulic brakes, (original) so it can even stop, unlike the Austin Seven!

All the older vehicles are on Club licence which means I can only use them on the road for Club events and testing purposes, but it is very cheap. The licence, including compulsory third party insurance is only about $A30 a year (12 pounds) - Keith D

Hi Keith,

Welcome to the forum. What nice collection of old vehicles. That comment about Club licences is just so scary. Shocked I hope this never happens here in my lifetime. Do you know how this legislation came into being?

Peter

Welcome Keith, that is a lovely line up of cars you have. One of the advantages of living in a warmer drier climate.

Peter, I think the Club license is an optional thing which is a less expensive way to keep the classic vehicle on the road.

If you want to use your classic as a daily driver then the option is there but comes at a premium price.

Am I correct Keith?

Peter,

We've had the Club (A.K.A. Concessional) licence since 1974. We all fought like hell to get it! It is entirely optional. My Austin A40 on normal licence costs me $377/year licence, and the Kombi on normal licence is $375/year. That works out about 300 pounds your money for both cars. The other three cars are on Club licence (my choice) and they cost me $90 the lot! (About 36 pounds!) Don't be scared of it; it's great! The cars are comprehensively insured on a group policy that costs $800 for the lot. (320 pounds/year).

Rick, it would seem that you are an A40 enthusiast so I have attached a picture of my rag-top with the lid up!

Rick,

Yes, it does have 4 glass sidescreens that I don't like using, as it makes it too much like a sedan!

On the open road, you can drive in the rain without getting wet as air over the windscreen blows the rain over and above your head! However, when you have to stop at traffic lights.............!!!!!!!

The sidescreens are clamped to the top of the door panels or panels behind the doors each with a pair of wing nuts. I've tried to find a photo of the car with sidescreens in, but no luck I'm afraid.

I thought they were talking about a club licencing fee.
We have better than that for pre '72 cars, it's a free road fund licence.
