Hi
Just joined the forum.
Bought a Daimler Conquest Century Saloon in a moment of madness ... was actually looking for a MKI Lotus cortina !!!
Apparently this car has the forerunner to full automatic gearboxes which operated by pumping the clutch pedal and then selecting your gear ...
I believe the system was called a "fluid flywheel" ???
Its very "boxy " in shape and not what I would call an elegant vintage .

Welcome to the forum David. I think you must feed us more of the story of buying the Conquest. It probably is not far short of the Lotus in BHP but there can't be many other similarities.

The Daimler was owned by a doctor who had lived in the same village as myself.
When he passed away (about 35 years ago) his widow couldnt bear to sell his beloved car ... He had retained every repair bill and spare part invoice since the car was new . he also kept a note book from when the car was new detailing the date and mileage and cost and gallonage of fuel / water / oil he ever put in the car every journey - mileage start and finish / destination / how the car ran etc etc.
amazing!

As far as I know all Daimler and Lanchester cars and Daimler buses from the 1930s till about 1956 had Wilson pre-select gearboxes ,after this they were fitted with fully automatic boxes.

Welcome.
I seem to remember the motoring press raving about the handling of the Daimler Conquest... must have been some time in the sixties.
Or perhaps I'm thinking about another Daimler model?

The Daimler Conquest first appeared in 1953 and was made until 1958 .The earlier models had pre-select gearboxes and I think the later ones were fully automatic

Welcome Fastorq. Good Luck with your Conquest. The actors say "break a leg"! Mind you don't though. Never meddle with the 'clutch' pedal adjustment, because it can 'kick back' viciously if you get it wrong, as the pre-selector toggles can flirt over-centre.
By the way you 'pump' that pedal AFTER you select the next gear on your PRE-selector gearbox.
