I emeigrated to Canada in 1964 and my first job was with a BMC dealer in Scarborough, Ontario. There was a Cooper S lying in the yard and it had just returned from the Sebring 24 hour races. The engine was blown and it was awaiting a replacement short block from the Austin Motor Company of Canada under warranty. The garage owner was the Canadian sports car champion and was sponsored by AMC of C. The garage was a busy place and the 'S' had to wait. One night we were working late on Lotus 19 with a Chevy 327 engine that was going to compete in the Canadian sports car series when a squad of cops came in and raided the place. Apparently our boss was selling stolen cars to finance his racing. The next day he's in jail and we are about to be out of work. The other 3 guys who worked there (A Scotsman, an Englishman & an Irishman....no jokes!!) were in a panic because they had all lent the boss money. The only 'asset' was the Cooper S. It got whipped into the workshop and the 4 of us set about getting the blown engine out and the new one in. It drove out that night and was bought back by the AMC of C and presumably sold as a new car.

Rick said 'I should probably know this, but what differences are there between Cooper and Cooper S? '
The difference is that coopers where only 997cc and later 998cc and had therefore different blocks, different heads, different cranks and less bhp (about 55), The cooper S was firstly introduced as a 1071cc and that was a very good engine and was made only for about a year so its quite rare, then a 1275cc version was produced which replaced the 1071cc and also a 970cc which was much revier than a 997cc cooper and faster and this is the rarest of them all, only about 900 (forgot the actual figure) were produced and just for homologation in the under 1000cc races where they used to compete with the smallabarths etc!!
Art Said 'Rick,
Cooper S had twin fuel tanks. '
Well actually yes the cooper S had twin fuel tanks but only in 1966 it was standardised, beforehand the second tank was optional!! |
