I wouldn't mind just the contents of the shelves!

Is it the psychologist conspiracy theorist in me or do these so called "barn finds" smack of hype, what better way to make people feel good to think "one day I could find one"
Also it comes up for auction what better way to publicise and excite people of this long lost car, I don't think for one minute the family or some one didn't know about this garage
As a psychologist I know what lengths are gone to to make people do something or is it the cynic in me?

Hi

The thing that interests me is always the background, in this pic the shelves and it looks like the shelves could separate the other cars, so there could be several bays of shelves, imagine what other goodies are in there!

I agree, Greeney, someone will know it was there, family, friends, locals etc.

The other thing, every time there is a Barn find, This is going to be the last great barn find, maybe for the guy saying it, but not for everyone, and how the hell does this guy know where all the cars in barns are, there are probably several sitting right under his nose. Old cars are everywhere, at least around here they are!

Cheers

Dave

You're right! The man from Bonhams had known about it for years:

Quote:
James Knight, international head of Bonhams' motoring department, said: "I have known of this Bugatti for a number of years and, like a select group of others, hadn't dared divulge its whereabouts to anyone."

stunning car though, whatever the story. I'm sure there are some real 'finds' still out there, perhaps known about within families but not yet to the outside world.

Oh of course there are REAL ones I dream every time I go into a new village in France, I have seen loads of garages containing old cars and I am sure there are so real rare ones around but its just the hyped up press ones that don't really ring true. It doesn't detract from the fact its a fantastic Bugatti though about to be saved

I guess you have the ultimate "barn" find in France too, namely the Schlumpf collection. Wink

From 2002 - 2004 I ran Classic Car Auctions in Essex and just like the Bonham's guy we were told of several fantastic collections of cars and motorcycles that are only known to the families and a few close friends.

Within a ten mile radius of my home I know of three Bugattis and two 1920's Rolls Royces in one barn that have not seen the light of day for over 30 years. The Grandson of the owner is a friend of mine and has told me that all the big auction houses are in regular contact, and have even offered cash just for the option to auction the cars as soon as they become available.

In another are two pre-war Lagondas and a 1950's Aston Martin, which the widow of the owner keeps as a memorial to her husband.

As in the case of the Atlanta, these will become the latest "barn finds" whenever the owners pass away and the families want to realise the investment.

yeah you can't beat finding something interesting, even if the owner knows what they have Smile pre-war finds are getting harder and harder to locate though. I did recently hear of a '34 Daimler sat in a garage somewhere, but I've not heard any more about that for a month or two. Sadly not quite in the same league as a Bugatti though..

This is one I pursued in 2005, a 1934ish Triumph. Driven into an open-fronted shed in 1956 and left ever since, and still in the original family's ownership. If the shed had had doors, it would have been in great condition (the engine - a Coventry Climax IOE unit - had been regularly turned on the handle). Sadly the elements had eaten away at the ash framework, to such an extent that the driver's door had fallen off. It even had a perfect '34 tax disc with it, and old oil cans etc under the bonnet.

I didn't end up buying it, but I passed on some contacts to the owner's friend and I did read later that it found a new home via the owner's club.

A friend of mine in Oz sent this photo, taken in a neighbour's barn. A cut down SS Jaguar 3.5 made into a farm hack Smile
