Its possibly something I'll look at in future, although a) I'm not really sure that many people would use it b) its installation doesn't always seem to be seamless, ie I've read plenty of issues of getting them to work c) time available to spend implementing it.

If there is a groundswell of desire from the majority of regular posters, old and new, then I might shift it up the 'to do' list

Only one members opinion here - being an old fart I still use dial-up and web sites with the "shout box" facility causes a really slow down-load for me each time I visit.

I would suppose this is because of the manner the constantly updated content in a shout-box is processed by the software and the type of software needed to support it, to a point that I tend not to visit these sites very often.

That said, I realise I'm probably in the minority being that I still use dial-up, but it is a view nevertheless.

Scotty.

Thanks for your view Scotty, yes page load speed is critical and I know a few users out there are on dial up. Last thing I'd want to do is make the page loads really poor

I think what we have is adequate enough. There's scope to chat to whoever happens to be online at the time. I don't understand the Shout concept tho'. We (at least I) come here to escape.

My 2 cents

Im against a Shoutbox.
I came here to get away from that sort of thing.
Familiarity breeds contempt and all that.

I think civilised conversation via the forum is preferable to a 'shoutbox' - somehow that name brings up unpleasant images of quick-fire aimless chat for the sake of chat, in a similar vein to innane phone texting. The 'noise' level on the forum might increase, but I'm not sure the quality of the discussions would benefit. So on balance I think I'll keep things as they are for now.

Interesting suggestion, and replies, thanks.

I have seen what these chat box's can do.. it can lead to a "clique" (people who talk rather than do!) but my main objection is that a lot of useful information can be lost due to it's transient nature.

Hi
Most of my active driving instructor forums have chat rooms, personally I stay out of them and people are regularly coming on the main boards that there is no one in the chat room to chat to.

They do very occassionally come into their own when some one organises a quiz night or virtual party but I don't need to go to vurtual party to open a bottle or 2 or 3.
