|
|
Hello all
I'm just cleaning up the carb of the 32 Morris, it has a small SU in the typical Morris fashion. I've not had a carb this early before - I removed the dashpot and piston but noticed that :-
a. there is no spring on the piston (correct? or is it missing?)
b. it doesn't have a damper attached to the removable (brass) cap, that goes down inside the piston into the damping oil, like on later SUs
Are these normal features of a 30s SU? the carb doesn't look like it has been apart or messed with in recent times, but I just want to check that its ok and all there?!?
Somewhere I've a Burlen catalogue that might shed light on things, but I thought I'd run it by everyone here, in case anyone knows??

Quite a few pre-war SU carbs as with Morris just had a plain cap and no damper as with my 1939 Rover 16.
My 16 does have a piston spring - the piston is horizontal as its a down draft carb.
Nothing is listed for a spring in the Morris either - if its a side draft it may not have had one _________________ Rover P2

hi
That is interesting as there is no mention here about springless ones, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SU_carburetor however there is an explanation about how to identify the type and a link (not functioning for me) to the Burlen site. _________________ Bristols should always come in pairs.

Can't remember about the damper on the cap, but the early 30s SU carbs had 'use bicycle oil' stamped on the cap. _________________ To Hell with ambition, it drives a man mad, I can scarcely wake up to be fed. |

Rick
When I get in the office tommorow I'll mail you a illustarted scan of the carburettter components from the Morris parts manual. You are right it has neither a spring or damper.
For info the later H1 which were fitted to the morris 8's have a damper but no spring
