Nic,

My '38 Buick engine has brass shims on the mains and rods. The mains are shells and the rods are babbit. Each shim is about .002".

Thanks Jonathan and Art, I wonder how many sets of feeler gauges I will have to cut up. Laughing
I was looking at the timing wheel for about 1/2 hour trying to work out how I was going to make sure the marks lined up as the marks are at the back of the crank when they line up, then it suddenly struck me. Give it my best shot, wind the crank back 45 degrees, put a blob of grease on the mark, wind the crank forward 45 degrees then back again, see where the grease is on the timing wheel. 1 tooth out. Drop the crank a little and rotate the timing wheel by 1 tooth. Check again and bingo it is spot on. That was way too easy.

This now gives me the oportunity to try a smear of silicon gasket goo around the edge of the mating surfaces. The copper gasket is painted with Stag Wellseal. Hopefully this will cure the weeping seal.

Hope that engine doesn't leak oil with the white paint!

Richard, it's a 1928 car, of course it leaks oil, its just a matter of putting it in faster than it comes out. Wink
I started it on sunday after I had decided to have a go a syncronising the points. Timed it on No1 then repeated on No 6. The set timed on No6 seemed a long way out, am I doing this right? Checked them again and it all seemed OK so lets wizz it over, 2nd pull on the crank and she burst into life. The Talbot has an odd firing sequence giving it a sound a bit like a horse on a gallop and that is just what it sounds like. I will check it with my stobe as soon as I put some coolant in.

Hey Nick, can I refer you to my MOT man. He can't get his head around total loss lubrication from my valve guides and mutters everytime the Jowett drips into his pit!!

Thanks Rick, I drove it to Lavenham this morning and stopped off at my chiropractor. He was not impressed with me starting it on the handle Laughing . The oil is strangely staying on the inside, um better check that I put any oil in it. Every odd sound makes me think it is going to expire, mind you my grandma made some pretty strange noises when she was 82 and she lasted another 10 years.

I fitted a pressure regulator in the fuel line to try and lean the combustion. It seems to be working and the Handi electric fuel pump does not seem to be working as hard.

We took the car for a drive and stopped for a cream tea, very civilised.

The condenser failed on saturday. I think I will replace the fuel pump before it gives up the ghost. Rolling Eyes
