Sorry, I can't do pics, but my bench is almost empty, cos I'm like BrianM, put things away when I've finished with them.I cannot work in clutter!
My desk is also clear (except when Herself has been there), as was my office when I was working.
Aren't I a smug little b*st**d? |

| I've tried to make a point of tidying up every time I finish something, or at the end of the day / evening, but it's got on top of me recently. I'm trying to tidy up, though, because it takes so long to find anything just because I know it's there, but there's so much clutter. I keep getting hold of old but perfectly good pieces of kitchen worktop that people are throwing out to replace with new, so I set them up on something and designate them as the "tidy" bench, which usually lasts a couple of weeks. |

I had forgotten that I had started this thread and thought I'd post the current state of my bench. I guess it is currently more of a shelf than a work bench but I do clear a space when required. I see it hasn't improved since the first picture.

While I can't claim to be an obsessive-compulsive type, clutter and chaos overwhelm my brain and it refuses to function. Work space is limited, thus the need for regular tidy-ups when doing a job, tools put away every day (otherwise I'd never find them), and so on. A place for everything and everything in its place, as the saying goes.

What a wonderful thread! It proves that I am not abnormal! The majority of forum members are untidy, total slobs, just like me! It's very comforting.
My bench tends to get used as a shelf which is crazy as I have a whole wall of heavy duty steel shelving units. About 6 metres wide and 5 metres high. I also have a couple of garden sheds just to house old parts.
For some obscure reason I usually do any repair work sitting on the floor. Don't ask me why, I always have and now with the advent of old age it is getting harder and harder to get up afterwards and the floor is now getting crowded with spare bits..........

No, it has moved and been used. That just happens to be where it lives.

Me too! I would not want to work on an engine, gearbox or rear axle anywhere else. As to the bench, most work pieces that go there are getting clamped in one or other of my three vices or are placed on the drill platform. My bench is very seldom used as such.

The fact is I don't really do much on my old car these days. That said, I checked it over for its MOT a week ago and discovered a slight petrol drip from the tank. Unfortunately this was from a soft soldered seam in one of the wells that enclose the filters and the seam was facing the spare wheel carrier and was not visible or accessible. I then had to ask my wife's permission to move a lot of stuff from the garage floor (temporarily) into her territory (the garden shed) so that I could get working space to remove the boot lid and tool tray, boot floor, a shock absorber and the wiring to the rear lights so that I could remove the tank.
I'm happy to report that the repair was successful and she passed her MOT. The 24th in my ownership.

Ah! I thought you were implying that I should give up mechanicing and take up gardening instead. Out there is my wife's territory again and she doesn't like seeing the garage protuding into the garden so she grows wall climbing plants up it to hide it.
