Hi all, Nick sent this info over about a veteran steam car he's rebuilding, and in particular his query about the style of tow hitch it should have - can anyone help????

---------------------------------------

Now I don't know if you can help but I am trying to find out what
American trailer hitches were like around 1900? I am rebuilding a 1902
Toledo steam car that was used in an attempt to be the first car to
cross the Rocky mountains in January 1902. I have made up the wheels
and the chassis I would have thought would have been made from other
Toledo parts that were used to construct the main steam cars. I can
reproduce these using the original car for patterns and I am able to
reproduce the body in ash but the bit I am unsure of is the actual tow
hitch.

I have attached a contemporary photo of the car and trailer and one of
the rear axle now; I would think that a triangulated section bolted on
to the curved and straight sections of the axle and led to a tow hitch
of some kind--which is the pattern that I am looking for. What do you
think?

Any ideas would be appreciate.

By the way I will away from the computer for a couple of weeks so may
not reply too promptly!

Regards

Nick

He should ask the steam car association, can't remember the proper name, or web address, will try to find it later.
