Over the last 5 days shy forum member Ken Page and I have been stripping out the old chassis from his 1948 Jaguar 2½ litre. Ken has had the car for quite a few years now and we have already reconditioned the engine with reground crank and new main and big end shells. The chassis was in very poor condition and after much humming and hawing we decided to bite the bullet and swap it out rather than attempt a lengthy repair. Neither Ken nor I had taken a body off before but Ken was very fortunate not only to have the offer of an excellent replacement chassis but also the help and advice of David Davenport and his restoration team to keep us right.

Although not photographed we also needed to strip a donor car and transfer the running gear into its chassis. This is now half way through but will need another blitz for completion.

Peter

Good on you Peter and don't forget to keep us updated! Doesn't a stripped down car take up an awful lot of room? And I would love to have a barn like that one!!

Fascinating stuff - did you find any hidden rot in the body when you lifted it off?

Thanks for your replies guys. Yes, I'd love to have a barn like that too but sadly we were just guests for this job.

We've been poking about this old car some years now Rick so there weren't any hidden surprises. The body wasn't too bad but the chassis was extensively rotted out along most of the box sections on both sides and this even extended to areas that are normally protected by stray engine oil.

The near side chassis rail had a 7 inch diagonal crack from top to bottom due to the loss of material along its lower parts.

Peter,

When you're finished that one there's one in Bothwell waiting for you. Laughing

PS
Is that the Dick Francis car?

I'm afraid neither Ken nor I have the skills to sort bodywork. Once the chassis change is completed Ken will be handing the car over to the professionals.
Ken has three of these cars. The one owned previously by Dick Francis is already well advanced in Dave's shop. Fortunately his third car is in excellent order and on the road. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H3AHgyYDE2U&t=52s

This week Ken Page and I had a second blitz on the chassis change. On our last visit we were able to lift the body off the old chassis and strip out all the components for transfer to the replacement chassis. We also lifted the body from the donor car and started removing its components. Over the last few days we have cleaned up the front and rear axles and some of the brake mechanism and installed them in the replacement chassis.

The engine and gearbox were just placed in for safe storage.

Once again David Davenport and his restoration team were on hand to help us with the difficult bits for which we are very grateful.

The rear axle and springs prior to fitting in the replacement chassis.

Levering a rear spring into its shackle.

The Ken's components start to fill out the replacement chassis.

It's been a while since I posted anything on this project of Ken's but it hasn't been abandoned. We removed the doors bonnet and boot lid and stripped out the fittings from them and these have now been blasted and undercoated. For the parts that are less transportable we have stripped off the old paint with a combination of paint stripper and "scouring pads". The shiny metal is then undercoated to prevent rusting in the interim.

I was wondering what was happening with Ken's Jaguar.

Thanks for the update Peter

I think Ken was so absorbed by his paint stripping that he didn't notice it being placed there for the photo.
