it looks like an aftermarket heater that could have been fitted to virtually anything - age? late 1940s perhaps even pre-war?

A few of the aftermarket jobs from the 50s and 60s are shown on this page, and yours probably pre-dates them

Rick, when did heaters appear on "ordinary cars" in this Country. The earliest original fitment heater I ever came across was in the 1939 Rolls Silver Wraith that you featured in the Old Classic Car Site. The 1939 Austin 28hp Ranelagh you also featured did not, although slightly later manufacture and undoubtedly also a luxury car in its time.

The earliest "ordinary" car I remember with a factory fitted heater was a 1948 Rover 60 (P3?) which was the first car I owned. I never did get it to blow warm air! Lots of popular models still came without heaters except as an optional extra right up to the late fifties.

Although after market heaters must have been fitted later to some pre-war cars I don't remember them being available until around 1950 or maybe even later.

I'm sure someone will know Smile

My Devon (1949) has a factory-fit heater. Devons first came out in 1947, and I'm sure it was optional just as on later Austins, Morrises etc.

Sidevalve Ford 10s (Pops, Prefects etc) could be ordered I believe with a simple heater radiator that fitted into the top hose, and wafted warm air rearwards into the cabin, but whether that was solely on post-war upright Fords, or was also offered on pre-war 8s, I'm not sure?

Used one on my 47 Minx. Had to put an old electric petrol pump in series to persuade the water to circulate. Gave out very little heat but in those days (Early 60s) it seemed pure luxury.
