Hi, I Have a 1927 Humber 14/40 of 2050cc. It should have a cox atmos carburettor but it’s missing. I have a good bronze 1920s SU type carb which I intend to put on to this car but wonder about the needle/Jet size, the carb’s inlet is 1” or 1and 1/8” any Ideas would be very welcome. Funnily enough you've just helped me i.d. the make of a car that I've been looking at today in an old photo.

Re the carb, do Burlen have any records or data going back that far??

Hi Rick No I wish it was as easy as that Humber used Cox Atmos on these cars till about 1928 the moved over to Zenith. I have been searching for a good few months now but there will be one out there somewere.

There is a first rate chap I know who lives at Shareshill near Wolverhampton who generally repairs Roesch Talbots and Wolverhampton Sunbeams but who has owned a Humber 14 as yours for very many years. It went very well indeed the last time I saw it.
He may be worth a phone call (Stu Lloyd 01902 734141) but perhaps you know of him.

Hi Peter,

That's a very nice car you've got there. It looks identical to the one my Grandma owned in about 1948-1953? There's a picture of it somewhere. Unfortunately she passed away last year, but used to talk about driving it through the Mersey Tunnel with the floorboards rattling

The family lived in Chester at the time, and I am wondering whether it was the same car? Unfortunately no one can remember the registration, but it was apparantly in good condition when it was sold.

The history of the car is somewhat vague. I know the last two owners which cover the last 4 years but only limited information before. The car was, I’m told, put in to storage for 28 years but I have no definite confirmation of this, However I do have the Brown registration Book covering the period you are interested in which tells me the car was in the London area over the 50,s the book ends in 1957. I have just overhauled the head as I found a broken valve guide on the inlet side which could account for the spitting back I mentioned above and for the interest of this link I enclose some Photos of what I have done so far. I have replaced the head but got put off by the recent very cold weather and hope to get it all sorted soon.
