In the second photo in this article, there appears to be a cut-down car apparently involved in this suburban coal mine. Austin perhaps?

Certainly looks Austin-ish. Austin and several other manufacturers made their engines available as power plants e.g. fo Bristol Tractors. Maybe this is what this was, as it seems to power the winding engine.
He must have been close to the neighbour from hell!!
