Hi all, does anyone have knowledge of pre engaged starter motors ?

I have a Jaguar Xjs Cabriolet, it has taken to sometimes not engaging the starter motor.
I have checked the relay and switch, both ok.

Sadly the motor requires dropping one exhaust and the steering rack before removal.
I suspect the solenoid on the top of the motor is failing to engage. I can only see the connections with the aid of a dentist mirror. They are firmly connected.
Any insights? regards Kels.
