In other news, I got given this by my wife's uncle at my wedding. After asking for first refusal if he ever sells it, he said "If you come get it fixed up you can have it!"

So when I move to the US hopefully next year, thats another toy for me to get running Very Happy BUT the MGB completion is still a priority.

Congrats on the Porsche - oh, and on getting married of course Wink

Thanks Rick Smile

Well, onto the MG. After much, MUCH cursing, the engine is in, hooray!!!

We got it in fairly easily & qucikly but then spent 3 hours trying to get the engine mounts bolted up. Bearing in mind that I paid for all the proper MGB V8 engine mounts and parts, nearly all the bolts AND the studs on the mounts were far too long and had to be cut down. Anyone who knows the later MGB's knows that the mounts are angled on the chassis, and therefore with studs too long, you cannot get the nut on...so why? Why when you pay for fortune for V8 conversion parts do they still not fit? I was fuming for quite a few hours, but here it is:

I've also wrapped up the tyres et as they get warm in this weather:

I am now stripping the cylinder heads and cleaning them up, along with making a crossmember to suit the new gearbox.

Cylinder head cleaning is coming on well, using copious amounts of Mr Muscle oven cleaner after the cleaning tank failed to clean much off. Here is a chamber before:

And one after

Exhaust ports are mostly cleaned save for the intricate bits

Here is a before and after rocker, again Mr Muscle works great!

I had to take the steering rack off today to fit the nut to the engine mount that side, thank you BL engineers.

I'm beginning to have a dilemma with the car now and i'm trying not to get too down about it.

Basically my parents divorced recently, and my dad has now moved away from where the MG is. Given that I can only go there one weekend a month or so to work on it i'm not so sure much is going to get done on it now. I'm contemplating putting it in storage until I have somewhere for it and can finish it on my own.

It sucks really...

Well my brother is now off work, so he's given me a few tips and new motivation on the car, so here goes! The red oxide primer was cracking in places, powdery in others and so I decided to just sand the whole car down. I've done it with wet and dry and in most places its come off pretty easily, so my pink MGB is now yellow (the cars original colour).

Where is hasn't come off, it looks solid enough so am just keying it. So far over the last two days I've done this much

Hoping to finish the other wing off tomorrow, then the roof and scuttle etc next week.

I've also been researching cylinder head upgrades such as porting etc. The heads are going off to my friend to have the valve seats ground and then I'll finish cleaning the ports and do any port matching that's required.

Getting the car all one colour (even primer) Really gives you inspiration; the restoration now becomes a build Smile

Well done for doing all the hard work and getting this far Very Happy

I too look forward to seeing it painted.

Thanks guys.

Flatting back showed up a few issues and as it was only 1 layer of undercoat it went through in some places. So after another 1/2 day or so of fettling, dad put on 4 layers of undercoat yesterday and all looks good. Its being left to harden today before the car gets moved to our makeshift spray booth and gets fully masked up ready for paint next weekend, if the weather isn't too damp.

In between all that, in repayment for all his hard work, i'll be helping my brother fit his freshly built 998cc engine into his Hillman Imp during the week, now that the workshop is free and all.

I had the same problem; going though to metal when I flattened the mga's primer, you need to determine if it's a "real" high spot that needs dealing with, before re-priming; I had a few of them !!

I also used to have an aerosol of primer to hand, to touch up anywhere where I had gone through.

Cheers

Dave
