When I moved from England, 2002, I sold my collection of Meccano Magazines.

There was every issue from 1952 to 1962 and an assortment with dates from 1926 to 1934.

Along with the magazines were several chests of Meccano, with some silver and blue dating from the mid 1920's. The collection was started by my father, who was given an assortment of pieces back in 1925.

The collector who purchased the above also took away over 150 Dinky vehicles, mostly Army vehicles, but also an assortment that had been repainted and detailed to look like army trucks, station wagons, bulldozers, cranes etc.

Everything had been really well played with, and the magazines were well thumbed. Only a few had lost their covers.

I received an e-mail from him about a year later to say that all the Meccano had been stripped and re-enamelled and was in use by a collector builder.

78+ years of use and still going strong....... I wonder if he was ever able to find enough parts to build the 1955ish walking dragline, or better still...... the infamous Forth Railway Bridge.

We never thought about taking photos of our models back then, in fact, I don't have one photo of either the Mecanno or the Dinky Vehicles.

Meccano was such a good teaching aid, it is kind of sad that it turned out to be far too clever for the modern family....

I will leave it there....

Hi Peter,

Any tinges of regret at parting with your Meccano/Dinky collection?

My Meccano and Dinky collection got passed on to a younger cousin but I don't know where it went after that. Mine was fairly modest. All silver.

I do still have my Hornby train set but the driving wheels of the Flying Scotsman got damaged in storage. It's O gauge electric. I have just enough rails for a smallish oval. At least I did when I last assembled it perhaps 35 years ago.

Hi Peter.... If there is any regret, then it is because it did not pass down from my family. However, I much prefer that they went to someone who actually wanted them and not end up being kept for the next 30 years before being dumped.

I never did have an electric train set as a kid, and envied my friend down the street who had the O gauge, with enough track to build a large fig 8 with an extra loop at one end.

My cousin had a huge 00 in a spare bedroom. His father worked for the GPO (that ages things) and the electric points and stop/go signal lights were all worked from an impressive control panel, that looked very similar to a post office switchboard, coincidence of course...

but to return to the Meccano, I grew up knowing which way to tighten a bolt no matter what position either myself or the bolt was in. Understood the torque gain or loss achieved by gearing. The principal of worm drive gearing that doubled as a braking system but most of all innovation, problem solving and the art of getting things right after several prototypes.

I am sure that I have likely forgotten more than some folk even know. I would have been quite young when my father told me that hacksaw blades were frightened of me and that is why they were always fitted with the teeth running away. 55+ years later and I remember my Dad everytime I change a blade.

Very Happy
