Western National timetable September 1949.

Cover from a Western National bus timetable
Shown on this page is an official timetable, dated September 26th, 1949, issued by the Western National Omnibus Company Limited (in association with British Railways).

Their head office was 48/50 Queen Street in Exeter, and this particular timetable covered the South Devon and East Cornwall areas. On the cover is a smart Bristol half-cab coach, with its destination blinds showing both Seaside and Country. On the back cover is a double decker bus, again in Western National's green and cream livery. The company operated excursions and tours throughout summer to all the popular destination down in the South West, such as Mevagissey, Newquay, St. Ives and Taunton to name just a few.

Also included are details of the Royal Blue Express Road Services, proprietors of whom were Western National and Southern National. As far as I can tell the Royal Blue vehicles were very well appointed. There is also a full page advertisement for regular Associated Motorways daily express coach services, which I think was a service offered by Western National, ferrying passengers from the South West up into the Midlands.

The timetable is liberally sprinkled with advertisements for Western and Royal Blue services. One ad that caught my eye shows a Bedford OB coach (probably Duple bodied) which ran Luxury Coach Tours throughout the West of England. Private parties could also hire their coaches for day trips to the seaside and the like.
