Hi,

My Zephyr speedo has stopped working. Upon investigation I noticed the cable has broke at the gearbox end. I have a new cable. I did a test fit with the new cable to the speedo and found it won't turn at all. It looks a if this is the cause of the original cable breaking. Any ideas of the cause of this and can it be rectified. Last resort to source another speedo. Any help gratefully received.

Cheers.

Did you by any chance just fit a new inner cable?

I just placed the inner cable end into the speedo to see if I could turn it by hand which I couldn't/ It appears the speedo has seized. Do you think theres any chance of successfully dismantling and lubricating the unit. I don't want the same thing to happen again and have to by another cable.

CHEERS.

Theres a few ways of looking at this.

One is that if you decide to try to repair it yourself, then you cant break it, can you? Trouble with this way, is if you mess up, you need a speedo!

Recently, I had a problem with the speedo on my 300. That was fixed simply by finding a used part. The old one, I am going to send away to be professionally rebuilt and recalibrated. Maybe this is the better solution for you?

I would like to hear the comments of others on this subject!

I'd certainly source a spare before taking the original one to pieces, that way you're not left with nothing if it doesn't go back together correctly. Smile

Yes i would agree to getting another speedo, you could fit that and then send original off for repair.

Hi,
Today I've managed to strip the speedo and free it. I have access to another for £30 if needed. Tomorrow I'll finish re assembling and fit new cable.
Thanks for your comments,

Cheeers.

Hi

What had caused it to cease, any signs while stripping/freeing it?

Cheers

Sorry, I didn't take any pics. The only reassembling remaining is to fit the plastic surround, and reconnect bulbs, wires and new speedo cable.
No I couldn't see the cause of the problem I squired a very small amount of WD40 in , left it a while and then it turned freely.
Cheers.

It may be worth putting a few drops of 3-in-1 oil in the pinion as the WD40 won't last.
Also a light covering of grease on the inner cable will help.

Just a word of warning here.

If an inner speedo cable is greased all the way, then grease can find its way up into the speedo itself and damage it. Its usual to leave the last few inches without lube. Opinions vary on how much. Using something like oil can have the same effect.....

Hi,
Thanks for your advice. The speedo has been refitted with new cable and everything seems ok.
Cheers.
