I'm a mechanic from the great province of Alberta Canada and love older vehicles. Presently I am working on a pair of odd vehicles; An Austin A40 Somerset which I believe to be between 1952 and 1954 which I just bought and picked up today
The other is a 1953 International R130 (1 ton pick up truck) which when I finish will be my daily driver.

I am curious as to where to locate the VIN on the Austin. I haven't found anything yet.

Hi Bruce,

Thanks for posting the photos. It's been a while since I had a Somerset, I know the chassis plate for the Austin A40 Devons I had was screwed to the passenger or driver's sun visor, inside the car, whether it was the same or not on the later Somerset I'm not sure, but worth a look there first.

That is where it was (was being the operative word here) when I touched it the poor old thing broke off in my hands. so I'm not sure what I can do about it.

Hello & welcome to the forum Smile

A few years since I visited beautifull Canada.
While there I saw a few cars in same condition as yours.

Here in Alberta cars and trucks in this kind of shape(and better) are in abundance. Most can be purchased at a reasonable price as well. This one was $500.00 CDN

Since the last time I was on this forum I have acquired another pair of Somersets

This is the second one supposedly the better of the pair. Body wise it is in good condition however the engine unfortunately is stuck from not having the spark plugs installed. The gearbox is also sitting in the trunk in pieces Crying or Very sad I'm still in need of a windscreen or 2, inexpensive if at all possible

Neat to see your Austins Smile I believe the "Counties" cars sold well in Canada for a long time, do you know of any others in your area that have been saved?

There are quite a few of these little jewels in Canada along with Devons, Cambridges, Dorsets and many other Austins. The list of European cars that have been saved here are in the hundreds of thousands.

I have all 3 Somersets here at home. Once I get a couple of restorations done I can start working on at least one of them, I just scored a beautiful grill from BC for $200.00 and believe it will find its way into the black one. I've checked them all out over the past couple of months and found I have 2 running engines, 2 decent bodies, but need interiors, windscreens, and some minor parts to get them on the road.
