Hey, I am getting into something different. Anyone like windmills? I have been researching my family recently and find that both my grandmothers and grandfathers families owned windmills on the island of Schowen and Duiveland in Zeeland. Holland.
The one belonging to my grandmothers family was swept away in the 1953 floods but the one of my grandfathers father is still standing and working. It has been turned into a 'Pancake' restaurant and makes pancakes from the flour it mills.
I am going over to Haamstede next week to stay a few days and see it.
Have always been fascinated by the engineering of windmills, with the wooden gear teeth driving huge millstones and lifting mechanisms.
will try to get some photographs. Hope this is not too far off-subject?

Don.

Great! There is a shortage of millrights, maybe that is my calling, restoring mills!

Reminds me of a certain water mill!

Cheers

They make for great photos, too.
Here's one at How Hill in Norfolk.

This seem to be a re-creation of a sawmill attachment, pity they had to use, what are obviously, modern RSJs.

Apart from me being a bit thick and thinking I knew the route, OK.
First long motorway journey with the new Kia Rio and I was very impressed. The 1500cc Diesel seems to develop incredible power compared with the 2.2 litre of the PT, I had before.
I went across from Dover to Dunkerque and was a little miffed about having to drive about 20km from the docks, in the wrong direction, until we found the motorway. I might as well have gone to Calais as we were almost there before the road to the Dunkerque docks started.
I have not driven to Zeeland for about 20 odd years and decided to take the ferry from Breskens to Flushing. Had trouble finding the Breskens ferry and when I did I found it had only been taking cyclists and foot passengers for years.
A few miles along to coast was a tunnel..The Memsahib hates tunnels with a passion and this was a very good example of the type she hates most.
Over 5 km of gloomy, badly lit and stifling misery.
We checked into a nice hotel in Haamstede and had a meal at grandpappy's mill and the following day lunch with a long-lost relative.
Wednesday we travelled north to Hoofdorp across unbelievable bridges, then Thursday, east to Doetinchem, near the German border, where we stayed with another cousin. Then on Friday the long haul back to Dunkerque. We had considered doing the journey in the Sprite but as it rained incessantly the whole time we're very glad we didn't.
Only saw one interesting car, a Citroen Drophead (posted on another string). Don.
