I quite like the Flying Standards, this is nice as a four door and I love the patina of the interior.

Can someone tell me why it is that so many saloons of that period do not have a proper metal roof? They all have a big rectangular covered opening which seems to be fit for a folding roof.
Is it because they could not press such large pieces? Too expensive?

Hi
Some cars had a fabric insert the front of which slid backwards and the fabric formed folds.
Some had a metal, sliding panel which slid backwards under the rear portion.
Many of these have, over the years, had a single sheet of metal fastened down over the "sunshine" roof as they are called; this is generally because they have started leaking rain water in and the owners decided not to have opening roofs.

Personally I have always wondered why, if you have a good, waterproof, solid roof, you would want to cut a hole in it.

Maybe a reduction in weight and to lower the centre of gravity. I would expect production methods were limited too.

Rick, Did a certain old car garage have a flying standard for sale maybe 10 years ago? I very nearly bought it, but being the age I was I couldn't get classic insurance. Sad

Before I knew the owners of said Garage!

Soon after I bought a Ford E83W instead.....

If I remember correctly, I was told that the old sit-up and beg Fords had the fabric roof as standard because its was too complicated/expensive to form the body shell with fixed steel roof.

Hi

It was a beige and brown one I nearly had, if you get chance ask them about it, see if they remember.

The Ford is next on the list, but nothing can be started untill the current one is done. Must stay strong! One at a time!
