Great progress Charlotte. To grind the valves properly and re-set the tappet gap, the only sure way is total removal. Other methods will work, but are never as good.

Nice to have Grandpa on side, especially if he has some mechanical knowledge.

Like Rick, I am looking forward to up-dates.

Good luck,
Dane.

Morning everyone!

Yep.. All valves are removed, cleaned up, and ready to be grinded back in! We have all the correct stuff to do it, so possibly (weather permitting) its either this evenings job, or one for this weekend!! Smile

So got a few more pics for you, bit of proof I do get my hands mucky hehe!

Good work, Charlotte. Could you not find a bigger hammer to remove the valve guides? Laughing

I see that you have spun the valve/s in an electric drill to clean them up, and that is fine, provide you only cleaned them and did not remove any/much metal from the valve face.

I am sure you have read up on grinding the valves, however, just a word of caution. You need to avoid the possibility of creating radial grooves around the valve and its seat, so make sure that you position the valve, with the grinding compound and use a fairly short back and forward motion, tuning the valve itself only about 90 degrees. Do that for a few times, then lift the valve, turn it about 90 degrees and repeat. A very light spring under the valve head can help make the 'lift and turn' action easier.

Make absolutely sure that every last tiny particle of grinding compound is cleaned away after the job is done.

I am looking forward to more updates, especially ones with photos.

I know I am going to sound like an old fart (my wife and kids say I am one anyway), doesn't this article give you faith in the future.
Best of luck with rebuild...

Could be wrong but from the photo I'd say that Charlotte was using a bit of wire wool for the job, so nothing to worry about there Smile

Morning!
Think it was very fine sand paper, or possibly wet and dry? The mechanic have it to me, I don't ask questions! (He's got more knowledge than me!!)

The mechanic managed to make a bit of a mess with that one.. Can always be sorted though!

Who said men can't clean hey!! Wink

Few more pictures, just little bits of progress the mechanics been upto on his week off!

Morning all, bit more progress!

We've starting taking out the footwell and painting up the new one to go back in! Next task is to get some marine ply wood for the floor... But this will be after we've sorted out other bits of rust! Smile

But anyway, here's a few more pictures!

We also now have a working starter motor and dynamo! Progress is being made Smile

Well done, Charlotte. Keep at it, and you will get there in no time. The excitement builds as you get closer to your goal.

Afternoon, just a little update for you all on what's been going on..

So all valves have been ground back in, the mechanics sorted all the valves clearances!
We've also managed to acquire some marine ply wood, so we used the original flooring as a stencil, and now we have new flooring ready to go in.
I've also cleared some of the internal rusty bits, and loose colour, sanded it all back, and primed it! Still some more to do though..
And this morning, I've spent cleaning the gearbox! Will possibly need going over again, but looking better than it did! Smile

Here's some picture updates too!

Last picture is from today, after a little clean up!

Also, any ideas on why the gearbox has 93 stamped on it?

May be to align with the engine identification, i.e. E93A

Good stuff, keep at it. I've not seen a gearbox with the "93" stencil on it before.
