While it's interesting, and pleasing to know that this significant aircraft is to be restored to original condition. If it had not been "discovered", it would eventually have become restored in a different way.
While on an Ian Allan tour to Airventure, last year. I got on a tour around Basler conversions, which, as the article says, is across Whittman regional airport, Oshkosh, where Airventure is held.
Basler are a very professional company, and when you see what they can do to these old aircraft, you would be amazed.
As the two jet engines are much lighter than the old radials, the fuselage is extended by some 10 feet, in front of the wings. This restores the c of g, and internal space is much improved.
Most of the old C47's are parked on a tidy tarmac apron, with just a few overspilling onto the grass. It's far from my idea of a boneyard. |
