Peter,

Thanks for posting this. My dad who was from North Wales came to Scotland in 1939 to seek work at the Rolls Royce factory in Hillington but was not selected. Undaunted he went across the river and got a job in the Singer sewing machine factory in Clydebank where he spent the war making machine guns.

I was at the old RR plant last week with my grandsons. Most of the buildings are now gone but the one that we were at is now an inside go-cart track.

There are some interesting industrial buildings in that area from the 1930s.

e.g. The Luma Light Bulb Factory

Further away in Prestwick there's the Palace of Industry building moved from the 1939 Bellahouston Exhibition.

The crankshafts for Merlin engines were forged flat and then heated and twisted before going off to be ground and machined.

That is a great video you found Peter. The Merlin was a certainly an icon engine but perhaps over engineered for it war time role. Or was it this degree of design that gave the planes their advantage ?

The one in the photo is south of the Clyde at Shieldhall on the way out to the airport near the M8.

Well off subject, but the Boots factory at Beeston in Nottingham, has some of the best 'Art-Deco' buildings around, with many shots of Poirot, and other 1920 period shots filmed there.
