Hi,

Anyone planning to visit RR this weekend?

I hope to, but I'm not sure on which day as yet.

I usually go but the distance from the car park to the halls is too far for me to walk if my joints are having a bad day. £15 to park closer is just taking the p*ss!

I think I'll go tomorrow, it's usually a little bit quieter than Sat/Sun although iirc the outdoor rally car demos won't be taking place 'til the weekend. As I usually spend most of my time rifling through stacks of old photos, it's not really an issue Smile

There were plenty of visitors in attendance at RR today, although getting in early enabled photos to be taken with more ease than was the case later in the day.

It was good to see the Rover-BRM again, for quite some time it shared workshop space with the Dodge while it was being restored. Last time I saw it, there was no engine in it.

Here are a few photos to be going along with, more will be added later.

Coincidentally, shortly after arriving home an email arrived to advise that Race Retro is changing ownership, following the 2016 event:

-------

RACE RETRO ACQUIRED BY CLARION EVENTS LTD.

Race Retro, the international historic motorsport show, has been acquired by Clarion Events Ltd from Live Promotions Events Ltd. Clarion will take ownership of the three-day event following on from the 2016 event which opened its doors today (Friday 26th February).

Clarion adds Race Retro to it’s motoring portfolio, which already includes the UK’s biggest indoor classic car event The Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show, the Practical Classics Restoration and Classic Car Show, and the newly launched National Car Club Awards.

Daniel Nwaokolo, Event director for Clarion Events, said: “Race Retro is a fantastic event and with many of the clubs that support our existing classic motoring events participating in historic motorsport, the acquisition is a natural progression as Clarion continues to support and develop with the classic movement.

“Race Retro comes to us as a well established, well supported show thanks to Live Promotions many years of hard work, and we look forward to building on the excellent foundations in place to further grow and develop the show using the vast experience of the Clarion team.”

Live Promotions purchased Race Retro from founder Ian Williamson in 2009, six years after the inaugural event.

Colin Ward, Managing Director of Live Promotions Events Ltd, said: “Given our own expanding event portfolio, it is the right time to pass the baton of Race Retro to Clarion Events and we wish them every success for the future.”

Those DeHavilland Vampire tail spars had a "sold" sticker on them when we went round on Saturday.

Saturday was quite a quiet day - not many people around - and I'm not sure whether that's why we finished looking round at least an hour earlier than usual and had time to go back to a few places to revisit.

The roadworks were pretty grim on Friday, on the A45/A46 a few miles from Stoneleigh - I wonder if they had an effect? ISTR a radio report of an accident closing the A46 for a time on Saturday.

Maybe. They seem to be really dragging out that rebuild of the big roundabout to let the main road go underneath - I'm sure it didn't take them that long when they did similar stuff on the A500.

Auction results for the Race Retro sale have been published.

£54k for a Capri 280 Brooklands - really??

All the results are here:

https://www.silverstoneauctions.com/race-retro-classic-car-sale-2016/view_lots/type/automobiles

I'm not particular interested in fast Fords, but I think for that kind of money I'd have been more likely to plump for the Escort Cosworth, or even better the RS500 Sierra Cosworth myself. The Lotus Carlton for less than half that amount appeals to me more than the low-mileage Capri too.
